DHL wants to build seven terminals for Kc1bn in CzechRep

DHL wants to build seven new terminals in the Czech Republic by 2008 and invest roughly Kc1bn in the project, DHL CEO for the Czech Republic Jiri Stojar told the weekly Euro. The new terminals should be built in Ostrava, Olomouc, Prague, Teplice, Plzen, Turnov and between Hradec Kralove and Pardubice. DHL management also announced the company bought a 100 percent stake in PPL CZ, the largest private Czech company involved in express parcel delivery services and focused on customers in the segments of IT and the pharmaceutical and electronics industries.

DHL to acquire leading domestic express company in the Czech Republic

DHL, the subsidiary of Deutsche Post World Net, has agreed to acquire 100 percent of the shares of PPL CZ sro. Based in Prague, PPL is the No. 1 private player in the Czech domestic express parcel market, serving customers mainly from the IT, pharmaceutical and electronic industries. PPL operates more than 450 vans and 11 depots across the Czech Republic. The acquisition follows two strategic objectives: Firstly, to expand business in Central and Eastern Europe and secondly, to combine DHL’s strong international business with a strong domestic business. DHL is the No. 1 player in the Czech international express parcel market.

Stamp price gap grows as European postal sector prepares for market opening

The Free and Fair Post Initiative (FFPI) today released its fifth survey
on stamp prices in the European Union (EU). The study, which covers the 25 EU member States, reveals that 20% of EU countries have increased stamp prices in the course of 2005 and that price differences are still wide. The annual comparative analysis of the FFPI points out that prices of stamps for basic domestic letters have increased in 5 member States1 during this year. In addition, the survey reports that the gap in prices between the old and new EU member States is still widening. It is in fact important to notice that costs have risen in 3 countries from the EU-15, therefore further enlarging the difference with the price in the new member States.

LEGO Group outsources logistics to DHL

The LEGO Group will centralize its European distribution center (EDC) in Prague, Czech Republic, and outsource its European operation to DHL Solutions. DHL will open and begin operating its new and customized logistics center in early 2006. Following an analysis of its structure, the LEGO Group announced that it plans to discontinue its five distribution facilities in Flensburg and Hohenwestedt (Germany), Billund (Denmark), Lyon and Dunkerque (France) and to concentrate its European distribution operation in Jirny, 10 km east of Prague.
The new European distribution center will handle distribution to LEGO customers in Europe and to LEGO distribution centers throughout the world (except North America).

Ceska posta only bidder for Czech postal service licence

Ceska posta, the Czech Post Office, was the only bidder for a licence to provide basic postal services in the next three years in a tender closed today, the regulatory Czech Telecoms Office CTU said. “The licence can be granted only to those who have adequate technological, organisational, economic and personnel qualities for such a task, including a branch network,” said Eduard Prandstetter from the CTU’s section for postal service regulation. Up to now, Ceska posta has always been the only applicant for the licence and has always obtained it. Prandstetter said the branch network requirement was one of the key obstacles to bigger competition among bidders for the licence.
