DPD tests next-day express freight delivery in Czech Republic

DPD CZ has been selected as a pilot country within the DPD worldwide network to develop and implement B2B next day delivery of non-conveyable parcels up to 1000 kg. The service is a first within the DPD network.

The new service, branded DPD MAX, has been developed in response to growing demand for broader distribution services, the company said in a statement. Customers now benefit from using one company, one label, one invoice and one contact person for all logistic needs when shipping small as well as non-conveyable parcels of up 1,000kg.

“Our progress on the Czech market enabled the company to enter a new segment of distribution. This project is unique within the DPD world. The Czech Republic is a pilot country to develop and implement this solution,” said Daniel Mares, General Manager DPD CZ and Regional Manager GeoPost CEE. DPD CZ has set up a separate network of depots and hubs to handle the heavier freight pieces, added Oldrich Kalab, COO for the company.

DPD CZ was established in 1994, is a leading player in the Czech parcels market. In 2006, it increased revenues by 20 pct improved pre-tax profits by 50 pct and increased international parcel volumes by about 50 pct.

ProLogis has leased 424,000 square feet (39,400 square metres) of industrial space in the Czech Republic to DHL Logistics.

Under the new deal between the two parties, DHL has leased 100 pct of the space in a recently-completed building at ProLogis Park Prague-Jirny, a master-planned industrial park located approximately 20 kilometres east of Prague, along the D11 motorway. DHL now leases more than 1m square feet at the park; earlier this year the company signed new agreements for two other recently-completed buildings at the park comprising 642,000 square feet (59,700 square metres).

Challenging times for Czech Republic

As of 2009, Czech republic post (EP) will be transformed into a joint-stock company. This should make the company more competitive, flexible and customer-friendly, according to the government. The move could also clear the way for a future privatization, observers say. Apart from this inner change, EP must cope with outward pressures. Recent research has shown that further switching from traditional postal services to electronic communications is still ahead, said Gabriel Pleska from the EP press department. At 3,400 branches nationwide, people can order certified excerpts from the business and land registries, Pleska said. EP has also strived to fill the niche opened up by transforming consumer habits, according to Pleska. “This transformation of lifestyle is reflected by our ‘post office in a shopping mall’ strategy,” Pleska said. EP has set about establishing offices in shopping centers, and people busy during the week can redirect their package deliveries there, picking up their mail while shopping on the weekend, he said. EP will release more details about its strategic plans for the future at the end of the year, said EP spokeswoman Dita Vaclavikova. Earlier this year, the Finance Ministry approved a hike in postal fees proposed by EP, which will take effect Jan. 1. The price of delivery of a standard letter, for example, will increase from 7.5 to 10 KE and sending a priority registered letter of up to 20 grams will cost 26 KE instead of today’s 19 KE. Other postal operators were also critical. The combination of the price hike and the liberalization postponement is bad news for customers, according to Petr Dusek, marketing director of TNT Post. 1 USD = 173.021 HU

Intec signs pan-European data mediation deal with DHL

Intec, a global provider of business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS), has successfully completed the first phase of a pan-European convergent data mediation project at DHL, an express and logistics company.

As part of a long term agreement signed this year with DHL s parent holding company, Deutsche Post World Net, Intec has entered the non-telecom data mediation market in Europe by delivering an integrated solution to DHL.

The project combines the Intec Mediation platform with Intec CEMS (Centralised Error Management System), providing the courier company with a unified platform that can gather, process and distribute its shipping records in real-time, while also checking and identifying information errors that could potentially lead to revenue losses.

Intec informed that the first phase of the project has successfully concluded with DHL s operations in Belgium going live with the platform in August 2007.

DHL plans to roll out Intec s combined mediation and error management system across twenty-four other European countries by the end of the year. The server hosting the mediation platform is based at DHL s IT centre in the Czech Republic.
