Deutsche Post reaches deal with union to merge domestic parcel and mail operations

German postal service provider Deutsche Post AG said Tuesday it reached a deal with its main union to merge its domestic mail and parcel delivery operations.

The company will transfer its package and parcel business from its express unit to its mail corporate division, putting oversight for both under one board member. Pending board approval, the transfer could be complete by next month.

The company said the move will let it improve service for its German customers, including package tracking and better delivery times, and add Euro2.6 billion (USD3.4 billion) to the division’s revenue, bringing it to about Euro15.5 billion (USD20.5 billion) annually.

Shares of Bonn-based Deutsche Post fell 0.1 percent to Euro32.21 (USD42.66) in Frankfurt.

First Latin American Mail and Express event delivers success in Rio

Senior delegates from more than 20 countries throughout the Americas and elsewhere gathered in Rio at the beginning of December for the first ever World Mail & Express event to be held in Latin America. They were treated to a fascinating two days of debate, discussion and networking at the Sheraton Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, with an international array of podium speakers sharing their experiences and ideas for the industry’s future.

Senior executives from conference host sponsors Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telegrafos expressed themselves delighted with the success of the whole event. After Brazilian Post President and CEO Carlos Henrique Almeida Custodio had opened the summit by welcoming everybody to Rio, a succession of key speakers entertained those present with their perspectives on competing and winning. With countries such as Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and the USA also represented on the podium, delegates were treated to a range of views and experiences from across the region. International viewpoints were also pooled by speakers from elsewhere, including Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain and the UK, with sharing best practice and lessons learnt very much to the fore.

Delegates were also interested to hear evidence of the low market share (compared to their international counterparts) amongst national operators in South America. Outside Brazil and Chile particularly, it is clear that private mail operators collectively have much larger shares of the letter delivery market than do the national posts.

EU postal reforms: Germany wants agreement by June

Germany, which will take over the revolving EU presidency for the first half of 2007, plans to reach an agreement between member states on postal liberalisation by the end of June, diplomatic sources told Agence-France Presse.
A European diplomat said Germany has the ‘ambitious goal’ of getting the highly sensitive text approved at a meeting of European ministers in June.
The proposals will also have to be approved by the European Parliament.
On October 18, the commission announced moves to free up the market for letters in Europe, following on from the commission’s 2002 directive on parcels and letters over 50 grams.
Currently, historical operators still hold national monopolies on letters weighing less than 50 grams in Europe, also called the ‘reserved area’.
Germany is seen as one of the member states that has gone furthest with liberalisation of postal services.
In October, Klaus Zumwinkel, chief executive of the Deutsche Post, said ‘Liberalisation that allows healthy competition is the only way forward. We are ready to embrace it’.

Deutsche Post plans major parcel restructuring in Germany

Deutsche Post is reportedly planning to merge its parcel delivery operations in Germany into the mail business in one of its largest restructuring moves for a decade. At the same time, unions are threatening strike action over plans to lengthen working times next year.

According to a report in German newspaper Die Welt, there would be only one delivery organization and one administration for both the mail and parcel businesses. At present, there are separate delivery organizations for parcels and mail in urban areas, while rural deliveries are bundled into one service. The 83 mail sorting centres and 33 parcel sorting centres that are no longer fully utilised could also be combined into one structure.

Unions Verdi and DPV said they feared a new round of job cuts among tens of thousands of staff affected by the move. Deutsche Post’s domestic parcel business is reportedly loss-making due to high operational costs of the parcel sorting centres and pay levels above those of competitors.
