Delivery companies are consolidating

“WE ARE competing with giants,” says Fadi Ghandour. The Jordanian businessman has first-hand experience of consolidation in the logistics business. He is chief executive of ARAMEX International, which began life as the Middle East partner of a number of American delivery companies. Partnerships and alliances allow operators to link with others to provide services in places where they have no operations of their own. All went well until 2003, when DHL bought Airborne Express, ARAMEX’s chief partner in America. The deal gave DHL a way to compete in the backyard of UPS and FedEx. But for ARAMEX it meant its link to the crucial American market was cut.

Deutsche Post CEO wants to keep majority in Postbank unit mid-term

Deutsche Post AG chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel told journalists last night that he has no plans to relinquish majority control of the company’s Postbank AG unit in the mid-term. ‘That holds for the next few years,’ Zumwinkel said at the press dinner. ‘The financial services unit is part of our core business.’
Zumwinkel added that the company gains additional business by having outlets that offer both postal and banking services. As a result, Postbank’s value has risen sharply in the past six years – from 2.0 bln eur to about 9.0 bln eur today.

KfW's 41.6 pct stake in Deutsche Post attracts investor interest

German state-owned development bank Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KfW)’s 41.6 pct stake in Deutsche Post World Net AG has attracted the interest of private equity and hedge funds, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing financial sources. UK-based CVC is said to be among the interested parties. It already holds minority stakes in Danish and Belgian postal services, it said. CVC’s head of Germany, Steven Koltes would not comment other than to say that ‘we are very interested in European post companies’. Other companies named ‘in the market’ as interested in the Post-stake, are KKR, Blackstone and Permira, according to the FAZ. However, there are no concrete talks ongoing with KfW.

Deutsche Post parcel delivery pricing probed in response to complaint

Germany’s Federal Network Agency has started to investigate if Deutsche Post World Net AG misused its dominant market position by offering lower prices in parcel deliveries to cut down competition, according to a prerelease of Die Welt’s Monday edition. It cited a spokeswoman for the Federal Network Agency as saying that the agency has received a letter from a competitor with a request to examine the prices of Deutsche Post. ‘And so we have started initial investigations,’ she added. The newspaper, citing sources, said the complaint was lodged by Hermes Logistik Gruppe.
