Exel refuses to comment on rumours of Deutsche Post takeover bid

Exel PLC have refused to comment on rumours that Deutsche Post AG is preparing a bid for the group.

The bid rumour pushed shares in the logistics and freight management group 8 pence higher to 860 at 12.05 pm.

‘The company does not comment on market speculation,’ a spokeswoman for Exel said.

Exel’s share price has recently been buoyed by intense speculation about a bid, with United Parcel Service Inc (UPS) and Federal Express also mentioned as potential bidders. At today’s price, Exel would be valued at about 2.56 bln stg.

Last month, the group was subject to a round of takeover speculation after it posted a 15 pct increrase in underlying pretax profits to 170.2 mln stg.

Deutsche Post not keen to participate in postal privatisations at present

Deutsche Post World Net AG is at present not keen to participate in postal privatisations in Japan, Austria, Belgium and Italy, CEO Klaus Zumwinkel said at the company’s annual results news conference. He said the group will only be interested in acquiring stakes in companies that fulfill several conditions, such as providing premium quality services and products. The legal framework in countries where the potential acquisitions are located must also be ‘reliable’, he added. But Zumwinkel did not completely rule out participating in the postal privatisations, specifically in Japan and Italy.

German Hermes to increase number of outlets to 11,000 in 2005

German logistics services provider Hermes Versand, a subsidiary of mail order company Otto GmbH, plans to increase the number of its outlets to 11,000 in 2005 and get closer to the 12,000 of its chief competitor Deutsche Post, Hermes said on March 18, 2005. In 2004, Hermes snapped up 3.0 percentage points of the Deutsche Post share in the market for package deliveries to private clients and plans to have a 10 pct market share by the end of the current fiscal year, two years ahead of schedule, Hanjo Schneider, CEO of Hermes Logistik Group, said. The market, dominated by Deutsche Post and Hermes, has a volume of 60 million packages a year. According to Schneider, Hermes’ prices stand on average 25 pct below those of its larger rival.

Deutsche Post says will not increase bid for Post Danmark

Deutsche Post AG said it will not increase its bid for the Danish postal service Post Danmark. The move comes after the Danish government announced it wants to sell its 25pct of the state’s shares in the postal service to UK-based CVC Capital Partners. ‘We respect the decision of the Danish government,’ a Deutsche Post spokesman said. ‘However, we will not increase our offer,’ he added.
