German Deutsche Post appeals cartel watchdog ruling

German postal services company Deutsche Post AG has appealed the ruling of the Federal Cartel Office (FCO), which forced it to offer competitors discounts for its mail dispatch services, the company said on February 22, 2005.

Deutsche Post strives to defend itself from the increased pressure by FCO and by some German politicians to give up its monopoly rights earlier than 2007 as scheduled.

The appeal is aimed at only preventing the immediate application of the decision and Deutsche Post expects the results of the appeal in the next few weeks, company CEO Klaus Zumwinkel said.

The company does not plan to hinder the opening of the market as demanded by the European Commission (EC), banking experts said.

Deutsche Post 2005 net seen up 25 pct due to new IFRS accounting rules

Deutsche Post World Net AG expects net profit this year to be 25 pct higher than last due in part to the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), a company spokeswoman said. Under German accounting norms there was a negative goodwill effect totalling 400 mln eur. This writedown will no longer be reflected under IFRS. ‘On an operating level, nothing will change,’ she said. She added that Deutsche Post’s US business is currently developing better than expected.

Deutsche Post spends tens of millions of euros on free package mailing promotion

Deutsche Post World Net AG is launching a sales promotion costing a ‘high double-digit million euro’ amount, a spokesman for the company said. The company is to offer its customers the chance to send a parcel for free to mark its 10 year anniversary as a limited company. DHL, the group’s parcel delivery subsidiary, is to provide all 35 million households in Germany with a stamp enabling them to send a parcel weighing up to 20 kilograms free of charge on Feb 25 only. Households will receive the stamps within the next couple of days.

Deutsche Post and Adobe team for online postage

Deutsche Post and provider of digital content software Adobe Systems have announced the launch of the STAMPIT WEB Internet postage service, combining the power of the Internet with the widely-available free Adobe Reader software. This services allows customers to pre-pay mail postage online without the need for dedicated software. Once purchased postage will be delivered to the customer as an Adobe PDF document that can be printed out and affixed to an envelope. STAMPIT WEB builds on Deutsche Post’s existing STAMPIT BUSINESS and STAMPIT HOME services, which have a combined 70,000-strong user base.

German states withdraw proposal to end Deutsche Post monopoly before 2007

Germany’s Lower Saxony and Hessen states today withdrew its proposal from the Upper Hourse Parliament to end Deutsche Post AG’s stamp and letter distribution monopoly before it expires at the end of 2007, as the prospects for a majority were slim. The proposal suggested the monopoly be scrapped two years early on Jan 1, 2006. Deutsche Post welcomed the decision.
