Time to consider alternatives?

When a player as significant as Polestar Applied is considering the alternatives to the Royal Mail it is time to sit up and take notice.

Last week, the regulator Postcomm proposed bringing forward the date of all out deregulation of postal services to 2006.

Currently, the Royal Mail still has a pre-eminent position, with exclusive rights to the universal postal system, which means anyone can post a letter from A to B in the UK at a geographically uniform price.

Although in theory operators can provide services in all parts of the letters market except for non-bulk items weighing less than 100g, competition is so far only emerging in bulk delivery, loosely defined as mailings over 4,000 items.

Deutsche Post Provides Ebay Services in Berlin

Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, is introducing an Ebay auction service in Berlin effective this Friday, which will be accessible even for those without computers. In the first phase it will be limited to 12 post offices, and, if successful, 50 post offices will be participating by the end of this year. The charge for the service will amount to 11.50 euros plus a 20 per cent commission on the sale. The customer is required simply to bring the objects for sale to the post office and complete a form. Goods will then be conveyed to a logistics centre for expert evaluation before each item is made available on the Internet.

Deutsche Post expands network in Latin America

Deutsche Post World Net’s specialist for international mail service Deutsche Post Global Mail und the Mexican post office SePoMex signed a strategic partnership agreement in Mexico City yesterday. Deutsche Post will expand its infrastructure in Latin America with this collaboration and gain a reliable partner for its mail import and export operations with SePoMex. The agreement will also give SePoMex access to Global Mail’s international network.

The agreement covers the operation of a mail sorting center in Mexico City which will be made available specifically for this cooperation. At this mail hub, SePoMex will prepare mail for export and hand it over to Deutsche Post Global Mail for worldwide dispatch. Deutsche Post Global Mail will feed inbound mail from throughout the world into the SePoMex network through this production center where the Mexican post office will sort, transport and then deliver it nationwide.

Deutsche Post close to purchasing KarstadtQuelle logistics units

Deutsche Post World Net AG is close to purchasing two KarstadtQuelle AG logistics units with combined annual sales of 625 mln eur, industry expert Horst Manner-Romberg told the Financial Times Deutschland. KarstadtQuelle did not confirm the report to the newspaper, saying only, ‘there are interested parties that want to buy the whole logistics unit.’ The Financial Times Deutschland said Deutsche Post wants to buy KarstadtQuelle’s Optimus Logistics with annual sales of 550 mln eur and Servicelogiq with annual sales of 75 mln eur.
