Japanese posts minister gets tips from Deutsche Post

Japanese posts minister Taro Aso on Monday held talks with a Deutsche Post AG board member in Germany to learn more about the German postal system before compiling the government’s draft this fall for privatising Japan Post in 2007, Japanese government officials said. Aso, minister of public management, home affairs, posts and telecommunications, discussed the advantages of privatizing postal services with Deutsche Post board member for mail delivery, Hans-Dieter Petram, the officials said.

Deutsche Post balks at ver.di union’s 4 pct wage hike demand

Deutsche Post World Net AG described the ver.di labour union’s demand for a wage increase of 4 pct as ‘unjustifiably high,’ as the first round of negotiations ended.

‘Certainly, many difficult rounds of negotiations await us,’ Walter Scheurle, Deutsche Post’s personnel director said. ‘At the same time, we will strive to reach a solution at the negotiating table, as has been our experience for many years.’

Negotiations will resume on May 14.

EU acts against Deutsche Post Germany

Brussels has warned Deutsche Post to make changes or face investigation over its monopoly in sorting letters under 100 grammes.

EU competition chief Mario Monti has sent the German postal giant a warning letter requesting Deustche Post come into line with EU law and open up its market. Currently, the collection, sorting and franking of all letters under 100 grammes is the reserve of Deutsche Post.

Berlin has confirmed receipt of the letter and has given signs it is prepared to make the necessary changes.

It has two months to respond to the EU’s queries.

Deutsche Post orders 4,500 delivery vans from VW

Deutsche Post World Net AG has ordered 4,500 “Caddy” vans from Volkswagen AG, said a spokesman for VW’s commercial vehicles unit.
He declined to comment on media reports that the order is worth 45 mln eur. Most of the vehicles will be delivered to Deutsche Post this year.

TPG gets in Deutsche Post’s way

In the struggle over future stakes in state-run postal services, Deutsche Post and its Dutch archrival TPG are increasingly getting in each other’s way. According to Austrian Post, both companies would be possible for a co- operation. Belgian Post is also toying with the idea of entering a co-operation. Only recently the company instructed Morgan Stanley to check the possibility of strategic alliances with other postal services.
