Postcomm issues a long term UK licence to Deutsche Post

Postcomm has issued a long term licence to Deutsche Post Global Mail (UK) Ltd to provide bulk mail, consolidation and enhanced document exchange services in the UK.

Deutsche Post currently holds a short-term interim postal licence for similar services. This will be revoked by consent. The new licence will last a minimum of seven years.

Deutsche Post looks to US for growth

Deutsche Post is considering a push into the US market to boost growth at Europe’s largest postal group. The company’s strengths have hitherto lain in Europe and in the increasingly competitive Asian airfreight market, through its DHL operation. Deutsche Post had little presence in the US until last year’s USD1bn purchase of Airborne Express, which provided it with a ground operation to complement DHL’s airfreight business. “The internationalisation of our mail business is not imaginable without the US market”, said Klaus Knappik, head of Deutsche Post’s international mail division.

Deutsche Post rearranging to challenge UPS, FedEx

In a bid to challenge United Parcel Service and FedEx Corp. as the world’s top provider of express and logistics services, Deutsche Post World Net said it will merge its international and domestic parcel delivery, express and logistics operations under the DHL brand in a USD 785 million restructuring that also aims to boost earnings by 40 percent by 2005. Klaus Zumwinkel, chief executive, on Thursday said the program was the “logical conclusion” to its recent multi-billion dollar strategy to establish a European express business and build a global logistics network. “This is the decisive step towards making Deutsche Post World Net the global number one logistics provider,” the partially privatized company said in a statement.
