Deutsche Postman gives us the mail

DEUTSCHE Post chairman Klaus Knappik says he believes Australia offers the best growth potential in Asia Pacific.
Deutsche Post has transformed from a mail-delivery service to a business consultancy providing market intelligence, databases of potential customers and production of marketing brochures.
Although the market is relatively small, Mr Knappik, who visited Sydney last week, said the world’s second-largest mail operator offered Australian customers value-added services, such as direct marketing overseas.
“The world market place is getting bigger, and companies in Australia which never thought they would ever enter foreign markets may have the opportunity to do so now,” he said.
In the past, they would probably need an office overseas, he said. But nowadays operators like Deutsche Post could organise mail shots in countries far away.

German monopoly body head says Deutsche Post stamps ops subsidize Postbank

Deutsche Post World Net AG’s profits derived from its monopoly on stamps may be more than 25 pct of sales and are so high it even subsidizes some activities of its Postbank unit, according to Martin Hellwig, chairman of the independent Monopoly Commission.

In his written comments published in Berliner Zeitung, Hellwig said the postal regulatory agency RegTP’s decision forcing Deutsche Post to cut stamps prices by an average of 4.7 pct next year do not justify plans by the company to cut 10,000 jobs and close down some postal branches.

Mr Knappik said the board was very much focused on expanding Australian operations.
“The Australian market is probably right now the most important one for us because it is the most developed in the region and in most other Asian countries we are not really that well represented yet,” Mr Knappik told AAP.

Canada Post not subsidising courier

Contrary to UPS’s assertion in your July 8 article “UPS browned off with Canada Post,” the decision in Europe requiring Deutsche Post to repay some $840 million to the German government for using monopoly profits and state aid to subsidize its commercial courier operation is interesting but has no “significant adverse implications for Canada Post.”

Simply stated, Canada Post does not use its letter-mail network to subsidize its courier business. In fact, the Competition Bureau of Canada has twice thoroughly reviewed the issue and found no evidence to indicate that Canada Post engaged in cross-subsidization, and this is also certified every year by independent auditors.
