EU Commission to decide Wednesday on Deutsche Post parcel subsidisation

The EU Commission should decide Wednesday on action to be taken about charges Deutsche Post World Net AG has subsidised its parcels operations through revenues on its monopoly mail business, spokesman for EU competition commissioner Mario Monti said.
Spokesman Michael Tscherny declined to confirm or deny a Financial Times report that the competition services of the Commission recommend upholding the complaint and fining the company over 500 mln eur.
The 20 commissioners should decide on the action to be taken at their weekly meeting Wednesday, he said.

Deutsche Post faces Euros 570M aid

Deutsche Post faces repaying more than Euros 500m (Dollars 471m) to the German government after European competition regulators concluded the postal group unfairly subsidised some of its loss-making businesses.
The decision – which could come next week – could anger the German chancellor Gerhard Scroder, who has repeatedly accused the Brussels authorities of attacking German companies.
The size of the repayment – one of the largest ever ordered under European state aid rules – would also send a warning to postal groups in countries such as France, and the Netherlands, which have been accused of similar offences.

DPWN Raises Express Rates July 1

With effect from 1 July 2002, Deutsche Post will adjust the prices for various products and special services offered by the Express division. Prices for sending small packets within Germany will remain stable. Reasons for the price adjustments include increased staff costs as well as the general rise in fuel prices and the insurance industry that has also led to higher prices by competing parcel service providers.

German Postal Strikes End

Germany’s postal service reached a wage deal with unions representing 160,000 workers Tuesday, putting an end to a series of brief strikes that slowed mail service and averting broader stoppages.
Workers at partly privatized Deutsche Post will get a 3.5 percent increase for the year beginning June 1, another 3.2 percent a year later for a period of eleven months, and a one-time payment of 43 euros ($41).

Guipuzcoana increases its turnover

he Spanish parcels service provider Guipuzcoana Euro Express, which belongs to Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), increased its turnover last year by 11% to EUR 277 million. It handled about 14.4 million orders and 39 million shipments. According to Guipuzcoana the development of the international parcels business substantially surpassed expectations. On the national level the rate of growth was more modest. Guipuzcoana Euro Express also recently opened a new logistics centre in Valladollid. The terminal has a total warehouse and handling area of 10,000 sqm.
