Hermes Logistik Gruppe to enter German letter market in 2008

Hermes Logistik Gruppe, a Hamburg-based logistics groups, plans to enter the German letter market in 2008, its Managing Director Hanjo Schneider told Hamburger Abendblatt.

He said that from January customers could use the company’s 13,500 parcel stations to post letters.

Schneider added that prices will be 15-20 pct below current postal tariffs of incumbent Deutsche Post World Net AG.

The letters, which will take two days to deliver, will be distributed by TNT NV’s TNT Post, in which Hermes owns a 29 pct stake.

Hermes mulls legal steps if German government extends VAT exemption for Deutsche Post

Hermes, a Hamburg-based logistics groups, is considering legal steps if the German Finance Ministry extends the VAT exemption for Deutsche Post World Net AG beyond 2007, its Managing Director Hanjo Schneider told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The tax exemption violates EU law, he said.

Deutsche Post enjoys an exemption from Germany’s 19 pct value-added tax in its letter and parcel services in return for its promise to deliver mail to every German household.

Without this advantage, Deutsche Post would have to raise its parcel prices ‘substantially’, Schneider said.

Hermes, which owns 29 pct in TNT NV’s TNT Post, moved some 50 mln parcels last year.

Schneider also criticized government plans to introduce minimum wages for postal workers.

If Deutsche Post’s wage agreement becomes a benchmark for the industry, the road into the letter market for new providers remains blocked, he said.

Postbank hoping to boost profits with new strategy

DHL to seal ties with India Post

Deutsche Post is looking at developing a strategic partnership with the Indian postal system.

Through this venture, both postal authorities are aiming at strengthening their global business operations. The entities are in early stages of discussions to ascertain specific segments, like last mile delivery, sharing infrastructural facility & technological innovations in which they could strike a partnership and initiate operations.

According to sources close to the development, with this strategic partnership, DHL will leverage India Post’s vast infrastructural facility, almost 150,00 post offices spread all over India, for their last mile delivery operations and increasing its market penetration. India Post, on the other hand, will be looking at benefiting from the superior technical expertise of DHL in handling logistics operations. The final structure of the relationship, though, is yet to be finalized.

DHL, along with its 81 pct stake in the Indian air express company Blue Dart, already has a huge footprint in India in the express logistics and freight forwarding segment, though, limited to semi-urban and urban areas.
