Germany's Sparkassen in talks with Pin Group for possible in-branch mail service

Germany’s Sparkassen savings banks are currently in talks with Luxembourg-based carrier service Pin AG over a possible cooperation which may include offering postal services at Sparkassen branches, reported Spiegel magazine, citing a spokesman for the DSGV, the German savings bank association.

At this point it is still open as to what form the agreement could take, but the report speculated that the DSGV might be looking into offering a service to compete against rival Deutsche Postbank AG and its parent company Deutsche Post AG, which offers customers postal services at its branches.

The report said it was also not clear whether Sparkasse or Pin AG employees would operate such a service.

Earlier this week, German media house Axel Springer AG bought a controlling share in Pin AG, raising its holding in the mail service provider to 71.6 pct from 23.5 pct.

Pin AG chief executive Guenter Thiel has said that his company plans to have a branch network as large as that of Deutsche Post’s by mid-2008.

The company handles about 2.3 mln mailings a day and expects to more than double its annual sales this year to 350 mln eur.

Official opening of the new South Runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport

After a construction period of just two years, Leipzig/Halle Airport’s 3,600 metre South Runway is being officially opened today in the presence of about 600 representatives of politics, industry and the media. The Central German airport now has a parallel runway system suitable for intercontinental traffic

With the opening of the South Runway, Leipzig/Halle Airport will have two parallel 3,600 metre runways that can service all aircraft types including the Airbus A380 with no payload or range restrictions. The two runways have a separation distance of 2,120 metres, enabling them to be used independently. Like the North Runway, the South Runway has a Category IIIb All-Weather Landing System for both approach directions.
Adjoining the South Runway is a 53 hectare apron for cargo aircraft, which was also part of the expansion project and which will be used by Deutsche Post World Net express subsidiary DHL from this autumn.

The airport shareholders have invested approximately EUR 290 million in the new South Runway, including taxiways.

Another EUR 60 million has been spent on compliance, including extensive noise and environmental protection measures and land acquisition

Deutsche Post reviving US air cargo ambition

Deutsche Post has quietly revived a plan to invest in the US air cargo industry which was dropped four years ago in the face of regulatory opposition.

The company last month acquired a 49 per cent stake in Miami-based Astar Air Cargo, which in turn launched an unsolicited bid for Ohio-based ABX Air. Both companies derive most of their business from long-term contracts with Deutsche Post subsidiary DHL.

The proposed deal follows years of wrangling over Deutsche Post’s role in the US air cargo business, which is subject to the same constraints over foreign ownership as passenger airlines.

DHL agreed to sell its 25 per cent stake in Astar – then known as DHL Airways – to a group of US investors in 2003 after rivals such as UPS and FedEx claimed it had broken the ownership laws.

DHL’s USD 1.05 billion purchase of Airborne Express was also subjected to similar scrutiny, and the air cargo company was spun off to shareholders and renamed ABX, while the German group kept the ground-based parcel business.

Astar, which is headed by former Northwest Airlines chief executive John Dasburg, also tried to acquire ABX in 2003, and the talks were revived last December before the Miami-based group last week made an unsolicited USD 7.75 a share proposal to acquire its rival, citing “unusual volume and pricing activity” in ABX stock.

ABX was asked to respond to a proposal which valued the company at USD 454 million. Its shares climbed 12 per cent in the wake of the announcement and were trading just above USD 8, fuelling speculation of a rival offer from management.

DHL said it expected no problems in securing regulatory backing for the two deals involving its suppliers.

Francotyp-Postalia Holding AG: Deutsche Post AG will negotiate new cooperation treaty

With the view to summarize the individual contracts into one cooperation treaty Deutsche Post AG cancelled the existing manufacturer contracts with Francotyp-Postalia GmbH and Francotyp-Postalia Vertrieb und Service GmbH.

In the sense of a strategic partnership the negotiations should be lead by the idea of cooperation as for example in connexion with bilateral marketing or communication measures. The cancellation was received on June 26, 2007 by both companies.

All existing approvals, rights of sales and charging standards for the up-to-date franking machines are not touched by the cancellation. This means that the cancellation will have no effect on models already authorised or approved by Deutsche Post.

Deutsche Post AG has, according to Francotyp-Postalia Holding AG information, cancelled existing contracts with all franking machines manufacturers in Germany with effect from 31 December 2007.

Negotiations are already in hand with a view to strengthening the relationship between Francotyp-Postalia and Deutsche Post. The target is to establish a strategic partnership between the two companies which would be mutually beneficial in the medium to longer term in light of the forthcoming deregulation of the German postal market.

‘A new cooperation contract offers the possibility of intensifying customer retention in the field of franking machines.’ declares Hartmut Neumann, CEO of Francotyp-Postalia Holding AG.

‘A future partnership with Deutsche Post AG enables us to set up new attractive offers for franking machines and enter new potential markets in the lower segment.’

The cancellation will have no effect on models already authorised or approved by Deutsche Post and the renegotiated contracts will apply only to new models which Francotyp may develop and bring to the market after 31 December 2007.

Through cooperation with Deutsche Post AG the Francotyp-Postalia expects to see further growth in the coming years.
