DHL Airways announces relocation of corporate headquarters to Miami, Florida

DHL Airways, Inc., a leading U.S. provider of air cargo services, today announced the relocation of its corporate headquarters to Miami, Florida from Chicago, Illinois. Effective May 15, 2003, the company will assume corporate operations at One Biscayne Tower in downtown Miami. “Chicago is truly a city that works and it has afforded DHL Airways a great business climate to grow and prosper in,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John H. Dasburg. “However, we have restructured the management team for DHL Airways and given the geographic locations of several of our members, it just makes good sense to relocate our headquarters location.”

US regulator to take fresh look at DHL ownership

After more than two years of lobbying and filing several legal pleadings, United Parcel Service and FedEx Corp. have finally gotten their wish. The Department of Transportation, in an apparent win for the companies, said last week it would take a fresh look, or de novo review, of DHL’s citizenship. The parties are set to meet April 29 at a prehearing conference before the Department of Transportation’s chief administrative law judge, Ronnie A. Yoder, where they will set a schedule for the hearing, a DOT spokesman said. The ALJ has until Sept. 2 to decide what entity actually controls DHL Airways, the air carrier to determine whether DHL Airways meets U.S. citizenship requirements for air carriers.

Judge will decide DHL case

An administrative law judge will resolve the dispute over the ownership of DHL Airways as part of an amendment to the USD79 billion Wartime Supplemental Appropriations bill approved by the House and Senate on Saturday. The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, also prohibits DHL Airways from carrying Defense Department cargo for the next six months. DHL had no comment on the amendment. UPS said it “reaffirms UPS’s longstanding concern regarding Deutsche Post’s ownership and control of DHL Airways.” UPS added that it looks forward to “the expeditious appointment of an administrative law judge.”

Analysts say Airborne deal faces tough battle

Industry analysts say DHL Worldwide’s proposed acquisition of Airborne Inc. will receive intense scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Greg Burns of J.P. Morgan Chase believes the deal will be approved because of its impact on competition despite fierce opposition from FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service. Other analysts were more skeptical. Scott Flower of Salomon Smith Barney gave the deal a 60 percent chance of approval, but noted that it will also be subject to political pressures.
