DHL in deal with Dubai Industrial City

DHL has entered into a strategic partnership with Dubai Industrial City.

Under the agreement, leading contract logistics company DHL Exel Supply Chain, in collaboration with sister companies DHL Express, Danzas AEI, and DHL Global Forwarding, are developing a unique supply model, said the company said in a statement.

The transPARK is a dedicated logistics park that will provide a single control point for, and access to, a full range of end-to-end logistics services to the companies at Dubai Industrial City.

Dubai Industrial City chief executive officer Rashed Al Ansari said transPARK stands to support the massive demand for logistics services that is being generated by the booming industrial and manufacturing sector.

Considered the third largest non-real estate project in Dubai, Dubai Industrial City aims to promote the continued expansion of the industrial sector in the region, particularly high-value manufacturing and production in the small and medium sector industries. The ultimate objective is to make Dubai less dependent on imports.

Using DHL’s global network, the transPARK complex will be positioned to provide services that include freight, inventory management, distribution and consultancy. transPARK’s warehousing includes storage areas for machinery and vehicles, bulk storage, bonded storage, racked storage, or temperature-controlled storage for perishable goods. Storage space will be leased on an individual or multi-user basis.

DHL to step up India investment

DHL Express plans a major expansion in India to take advantage of the growth and penetration of retail business in the country, by increasing its exclusive outlets and strengthening road network.

The company is set to open 1,000 retail points across the country by 2010, up from the 150 centres that currently offer its products. DHL, which owns an 81.03% stake in Mumbai-based air express and transportation company Blue Dart Express Ltd, will also start at least 100 transportation hubs to help link the company to smaller towns and non-metro cities and towns.

The Indian logistics market is expected to reach USD 122 billion by 2015 from USD 45 billion today, according to market estimates. Most firms would like to capitalize on this growth potential by offering complete solutions, but such an effort would be difficult as they would need sizeable fleet and investment, said a Mumbai-based transport analyst, who didn’t wish to be identified.

The strengthening of road network would include creating small and large cargo collection centres and adding more vehicles. DHL serves 17,500-plus cities and towns through Blue Dart. In February 2007, it had announced a restructuring of business in India and South Asia.

Deutsche Post to decide on future of US express ops in May

Deutsche Post World Net AG will present its decision on the future of its troubled US express operations in May, chief executive Frank Appel said during the German mail services company annual press conference.

Deutsche Post’s US express operations have posted unspecified losses since the company entered the market in 2004. It booked a 600 mln eur write-down of the operations during the fourth quarter.

Deutsche Post in January said it is considering several options for the troubled operations.

A pull-out is not an option, as the US market is an integral part of the group’s growth strategy, Appel said according to sheets distributed ahead of his speech.

Deutsche Post’s express division posted full-year negative EBIT of 172 mln eur after a positive EBIT of 288 mln in 2006.

DHL Express reported interested in Romanian parcels firm Cargus

DHL Express is interested in acquiring one of the leading domestic parcels companies in Romania to strengthen its business there, according to a recent media report.

The Romanian business newspaper Ziarul Financiar reported that DHL is in talks to buy a stake in privately-owned Cargus, citing market sources. The information was not confirmed by company officials. Cargus is owned by two low-profile business people, Augustin Plesea and Carmina Dumitrescu, the newspaper said.

The Romanian company, with turnover of EUR 29.7 million in 2007, is valued at EUR 50 million and aims to grow by 50 pct this year, the newspaper wrote.

FedEx in talks to buy DHL stake

FedEx reportedly is in talks to buy all or part of Deutsche Post’s DHL delivery business in the U.S. in a deal that would help it challenge larger rival UPS.

Seeking to cut losses in the hyper-competitive domestic fast delivery business, Deutsche Post may move to trim its DHL business in the United States, without abandoning it completely, according to published reports on Friday.

Deutsche Post CFO John Allan was quoted by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a German newspaper, that a total sale of DHL in the U.S. is “very, very unlikely.”

A deal could be in the works by May at the latest, according to the report.

Shares of FedEx rose 1.6% to end at USD89.96, bucking the move down in the overall market. UPS fell 1.8% to USD69.97.

A spokesman for Memphis-based FedEx didn’t return a phone call from MarketWatch.

Analyst Rick Paterson of UBS said FedEx doesn’t really need DHL’s U.S. delivery assets, and that it simply has to wait for it to lose ground over time to eventually win over its domestic market share.

FedEx, however, would benefit if DHL allowed it to become the U.S. distributor of its hefty package traffic originating in Europe and Asia, he said.

FedEx would have the edge in any talks because Deutsche Post is under pressure from shareholders to produce some kind of value for DHL.

A deal between DHL and UPS is less likely because of the “more contentious relationship” between the two giants overseas, he said.

One of the world’s largest delivery companies with 4,000 offices, DHL traces its roots to 1969 in the U.S. before being acquired by Deutsche Post in 2002.
