DHL Opens New Cargo Hub At Jkia, Kenya

DHL Express has opened a new air express facility at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The facility, Kenya’s largest-ever, is aimed at bolstering DHL Kenya’s position as a transport hub for the East and Central Africa region. The 2200 sq metre facility will operate 24 hours to consolidate inbound and outbound express shipments, and trans-shipment to the DHL Global network, including East and Central Africa, South Africa and the Middle East Region. “The opening of DHL’s new hub is an important milestone for company. As the largest hub of its kind in Kenya, with Customs and Excise personnel on site to manage import/export processing, it will greatly enhance the company’s position as a distribution and transport hub for this region,” said Howard Goldfield, DHL Commercial Manager for Equatorial Africa.

DHL Threatens to Quit Brussels

DHL, the express subsidiary of DPWN, has threatened to move its European hub from Brussels if plans for its growth are not approved by the Belgian authorities. Such a move would bring about the loss of 3,000 existing and up to 9,000 future jobs making the decision politically explosive. At present there is a cap on night flights in and out of the airport and the Belgian government is committed to retaining this level due to pressure from local residents. The Belgian government is expected to discuss the issue this week.

Deutsche Post makes good progress with restructuring of Express Services

Deutsche Post, the German postal service, says that it has made good progress with the restructuring of its parcel and express services in Germany and Europe. All of the company’s services in this field are to be combined under the umbrella of DHL Express. This is expected to lead to job cuts, as the company believes that it will be able to carry out the same volume of work with fewer staff. DHL currently employs 90,000 staff in Europe. In particular, staff in administrative functions are expected to be affected by the changes.

Vaspex Brazil forges partnership with DHL

Vaspex, the cargo transportation services arm of the Brazilian airline company Vasp, is resuming the services of international deliveries through a partnership with DHL Express, expecting 8,000 orders per month and R$1million income per month as of 2004.
