LEGO Group outsources logistics to DHL
The LEGO Group will centralize its European distribution center (EDC) in Prague, Czech Republic, and outsource its European operation to DHL Solutions. DHL will open and begin operating its new and customized logistics center in early 2006. Following an analysis of its structure, the LEGO Group announced that it plans to discontinue its five distribution facilities in Flensburg and Hohenwestedt (Germany), Billund (Denmark), Lyon and Dunkerque (France) and to concentrate its European distribution operation in Jirny, 10 km east of Prague.
The new European distribution center will handle distribution to LEGO customers in Europe and to LEGO distribution centers throughout the world (except North America).
German Deutsche Post to strengthen logistics division
Deutsche Post AG is looking for acquisitions in the Asian and American region in line with the strategy to strengthen its logistics business, Frank Appel, member of the management board, said on April 12, 2005.
Deutsche Post’s DHL Danzas Air & Ocean unit in the Asia-Pacific region and German logistics company DHL Solutions are the two subsidies to profit the most from the expansion strategy. Deutsche Post aims to be market leader in air and marine cargo freight as well as to be among the top 3 in contract logistics.
The group’s logistics business reported a 15.4 pct year-on-year increase in sales to 6.8 bln euro (USD8.79 bln) in 2004. Danzas generated some 4.9 bln euro (USD6.33 bln) of them while DHL Solutions sales accounted for 1.8 bln euro (USD2.33 bln). The earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) rose to 281 mln euro (USD363.1 mln), compared to 206 mln euro (USD266.2 mln) in 2003.
DHL Signs Swisscom Phone Contract
Logistic company DHL Solutions, a unit of Deutsche Post AG (G.DPW), said Monday that it has signed a four-year contract with Swisscom AG’s (Z.SCM) fixed-line unit worth CHF2 million a year. DHL Solutions will handle the repair, exchange and disposal of around 700,000 Swisscom telephones a year.
