Poor labour relations in Belgium may cause international dispute for DHL

The International Transport Workers Federation warned that a local labour problem in Belgium could turn into a major international dispute for DHL Worldwide. The problem began when DHL fired a senior shop steward in Brussels, prompting his co-workers at the airport to refuse to load DHL aircraft, according to the labour federation.

UPS and Fedex set to pounce on DHL court filing

DHL Airways will clarify its ownership and operational structure in a filing today with the Department of Transportation. Opponents FedEx and United Parcel Service expect to use the filing to bolster their case that the air carrier is controlled by German distribution group, Deutsche Post. The documents were ordered by Ronnie Yoder, the DoT’s chief administrative law judge, in a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. Judge Yoder is proceeding with a public hearing on August 19 to determine if DHL Airways, based in Miami, violates US laws limiting foreign ownership and control of US carriers.

DHL Airways to re-brand as Astar Air Cargo

DHL Airways today announced that the Miami-based cargo airline is launching a re-branding program, and changing its name to ASTAR (pronounced A-Star) AIR CARGO, INC. The re-branding will commence immediately and the name change will become effective upon completion of the acquisition of DHL Airways by a U.S. investor group led by Chairman and CEO John Dasburg. In the coming months, the charter cargo airline will incorporate the ASTAR name and logo throughout all of its marketing and operations functions.

DHL Airways sells off to investor group for USD57 million

DHL Worldwide Express has agreed to sell its DHL Airways unit to an investor group led by John Dasburg, chairman and chief executive of the U.S. airline, for USD57 million. The deal, which is expected to close by June 30 subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation, is unlikely to silence claims by rivals FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service that the airline does not comply with U.S. ownership laws.

US judge seeks to extend deadline for DHL ruling

A federal judge is seeking a delay of nearly three months in a decision on whether DHL Airways meets the government’s definition of a US-owned company. Administrative Law Judge Ronnie Yoder recommended in a report to the US Department of Transportation that a September 2 deadline for the decision be pushed back to November 24. The department has the final say on moving the date back.
