Appel Discusses DPWN's Prospects in China

CEO Frank Appel has implied that DHL Express has 40 pct of the Chinese international express market and that his principal interest is in expanding the German global logistics group’s business in that country.

Appel discussed a number of the issues which have thrust his company into the headlines on both sides of the Atlantic. He continued to dodge questions about redundancies at the DHL hub in Wilmington, Ohio, following the company’s recently-announced restructuring of its US operations but stated that land transport business in North America was profitable. He also described himself as “not in any haste” on the issue of the Deutsche Post Bank sale, despite rumours that a number of offers have already been received and that a deal might be agreed within a few weeks.

Appel was more forthcoming about his company’s prospects in China, where he implied that DHL Express had a market-leading position. When journalists suggested that DHL Express controlled roughly 40 pct of the international express delivery market in China he replied that “what is being mentioned isn’t totally wrong”. He went on to say that he “saw no essential need to expand the company’s market share” in the cross-border express business.

However, it is in logistics that DPWN sees the most business development potential where China is concerned. Appel said the Chinese logistics market was highly fragmented but offered even more growth opportunities than express. The problem for the company was finding the right sort of partners in order to pursue that growth.

Sinotrans mulls logistics merger with Yangtze Transportation (PRC)

Sinotrans, the Chinese conglomerate partnered with DHL is considering merging with the country’s top river-shipping operator to create a national logistics giant, sending shares in its main listed arm up 6 percent on Wednesday.

Sinotrans Ltd, a joint venture partner of DHL and Korean Air, said its controlling shareholder of the same name was thinking of merging with the China Yangtze Transportation (Group) Corp.

If it goes ahead, the move would create a sprawling transport corporation operating everything from marine, oil and river shipping to express delivery, freight forwarding and warehousing, as Beijing spurs consolidation of a large but fragmented sector.

Analysts believe the deal will open opportunities for Sinotrans’ listed units — Sinotrans Ltd and Sinotrans Shipping Ltd — to buy assets from their state parent in future, though it will not have an immediate impact on listed firms.

After merging with Yangtze Transportation, which had total assets of 41.2 billion yuan (USD 5.8 billion) in 2007, Sinotrans would become the nation’s largest shipping and logistics conglomerate after the marine-oriented COSCO group.

Sinotrans and Yangtze Transportation, which controls two mainland Chinese-listed firms (Nanjing Tanker and Changjiang Phoenix) will form a group named the China Logistics Group to hold the interests of both parties, media reports said this week.

Ohio urges DHL to reconsider UPS move

Ohio is asking the German owner of package delivery company DHL to reconsider a proposal that could mean the loss of at least 6,000 jobs at the DHL hub in southwest Ohio.

DHL wants to drop ABX Air and ASTAR as its air cargo handlers at the hub in Wilmington and replace them with Atlanta-based United Parcel Service. UPS would handle DHL packages at UPS’ existing hubs.

Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher says Frank Appel, chief executive of Deutsche Post World Net, told him Monday that he would be willing to explore other options, but made it clear that DHL intends to move forward with the UPS transaction.
