Seur franchise owners reportedly ready to sell

A group of Seur franchise owners is ready to sell their holdings which add to up to a majority stake in the leading Spanish parcels company, according to media reports. DHL, UPS and investment funds are reportedly interested but existing shareholders, including GeoPost, have the right to outbid them.

The group of franchisees represents 52 pct of the capital of the parent company, Seur SA, 65pct of the franchises by number, and generate 56 pct of gross profits, Spanish newspapers Expansión and El Mundo reported. The regional operators have jointly commissioned investment bank Arcano to seek offers for their shareholdings. International equity funds and multinationals such as DHL and UPS are interested parties, Expansión wrote.

The express parcels group has a complex, decentralised ownership structure comprising regional franchisees who also own small stakes in the parent company Seur SA. Seur has 85 franchisees in total controlled by 54 companies. More than 75pct of these owners are among the prospective sellers, according to the newspapers.

The largest single shareholder is GeoPost, the French La Poste subsidiary, which has built up a 19.6 pct stake in the parent company in recent years by gradually acquiring individual franchisees through the joint venture Seur-GeoPost.

In a company statement, Seur reiterated that the right of first refusal on any shareholder shares being sold meant that it would have preference over any outsider buyer as long as it matched their offer. The head office had not been officially informed by any shareholder that it wanted to sell its holding, it added.

FedEx expects to win market share from Deutsche Post's DHL in the U.S.

FedEx Corp expects to win substantial market share from Deutsche Post World Net AG. Express unit DHL in the United States after its German peer decided to quit air-freight shipments and cut down on its ground capacities.

‘We really act on the assumption that customers will feel it when DHL scraps a third of its network,’ Michael Muehlberger, deputy head of FedEx’s Central and Eastern European operations told Financial Times Deutschland.

FedEx holds some 30 percent market share in the U.S. express market, compared with DHL’s 6 percent, according to estimates.

DHL’s loss-making U.S. operations are to tie up in domestic and international airfreight shipments with United Parcel Service Inc.

It will also reduce excess capacities of its U.S. express ground infrastructure by some 30 percent to adapt it to shipment volumes, and will expand cooperation with the U.S. Postal Service in sparsely-populated areas.

Muehlberger confirmed FedEx was in talks with Deutsche Post over a possible tie-up, but declined to provide details on why talks failed.

Deutsche Post may seek USD 18.6 Billion for Postbank

Deutsche Post AG may seek about 12 billion euros (USD 18.6 billion) in its sale of Deutsche Postbank AG, Germany’s biggest consumer bank by clients, three people with knowledge of the transaction said.

Deutsche Post may aim for 70 euros a share for Postbank, 17 percent more than yesterday’s closing price, the people said. Postbank is drawing interest from German financial-services companies Allianz SE, Commerzbank AG and Deutsche Bank AG as well as Spain’s Banco Santander SA, said the people who declined to be identified because the matter is confidential.

Postbank, with more than 14.5 million customers and 850 branches, will give potential buyers an opportunity to grab a bigger share of Germany’s USD 1.6 trillion consumer-lending market, which is dominated by state-owned lenders and savings banks. Shares of the Bonn-based bank have risen 40 percent in the seven months since Deutsche Post, Europe’s biggest postal service, said it’s considering a sale of the unit.

Postbank has almost 5 million more retail customers than its second closest rival Deutsche Bank, according to a report by Sal. Oppenheim. The lender posted a pretax return on equity of 19.3 percent last year ahead of Commerzbank’s 18.7 percent and Dresdner Bank’s 8.5 percent, it said.

Postbank extended gains and rose 4 percent to 62.10 euros in Frankfurt electronic trading, valuing the company at 10.2 billion euros.

ABX Air says DHL plan would cost 6,000 ABX jobs

The president of ABX Air said a plan by DHL to hire United Parcel Service Inc. as its air cargo carrier in the United States is expected to cost 6,000 ABX workers their jobs at a freight hub in this southwest Ohio city.

ABX Air President John Graber told the Wilmington News Journal for a story Thursday that ABX Air’s night sort operations would be eliminated under the plan.

Graber and other ABX Air executives have been meeting with employees to tell them about the effects of the DHL plan if DHL succeeds in reaching a contract agreement with UPS.

The night airfreight operations would no longer be needed because UPS has its own system, he said.

DHL is the struggling U.S.-based express shipping unit of German postal service Deutsche Post AG. DHL contracts with ABX Air to operate the hub.

Messages were left at DHL Thursday and at ABX Air, a unit of Air Transport Services Group Inc., seeking comment from Graber. ABX Air spokeswoman Beth Huber said he was unavailable.

Huber said DHL told ABX Air officials Tuesday that it was going to reduce the aircraft it would need from the ABX Air fleet by 39 jets over a period of 12 to 18 months. She also said DHL said it was in negotiations with UPS, but that a deal had not been completed and ABX Air couldn’t speculate on it.

Graber told the News Journal that he projects ABX Air would have a work force of about 900 to 1,000 in Wilmington if the restructuring is implemented. ABX Air currently has about 7,000 employees at the DHL Air Park in Wilmington.
