DHL Japan extends cut-off times in Osaka Prefecture and Tokyo’s Nerima and Nakano Wards

DHL, a leading express and logistics company, has optimized delivery routes to extend cut-off times in two Tokyo wards and four Osaka Prefecture districts by 60 to 90 minutes.

Since 2005, DHL Japan has opened fifteen service centers, which are centers for collection, delivery and sales operations, as an investment aimed at reinforcing ground infrastructure in Japan. As part of such initiatives, DHL Japan has also increased the number of service centers in Osaka and Tokyo by a total of three in order to respond to the growth in cargo volume. Consequently, the speed in cargo processing increased for the areas where cut-off times were extended this time. The faster cargo processing, along with an improved cooperative structure among staff responsible for each area served by the service centers, enabled the development of collection and delivery routes that are more efficient than ever before and thereby enabled the cut-off times to be extended.

DHL agrees to buy 49 percent stake in Polar Air Support Services

DHL, the express delivery arm of Deutsche Post, has agreed to buy a 49 per cent stake in US-owned Polar Air Cargo to strengthen its presence in the trans-Pacific parcel and freight markets.

The deal represents a challenge to UPS and FedEx, the US express delivery groups, which currently dominate the tightly regulated market between Asia and the US.

DHL has a large parcel network in Asia and is also investing heavily in the US but before yesterday’s deal it lacked its own air capacity between the two markets.

Demand for trans-Pacific express delivery services is increasing sharply as trade between the US and China soars.

In return for its Dollars 150m investment in Polar, DHL will secure guaranteed capacity on the airline’s routes across the Pacific for up to 20 years.

“This key strategic partnership ensures we can meet the rapidly rising demand for air cargo capacities between the US and Asian destinations,” said John Mullen, chief executive of DHL’s express division.

UPS and FedEx each have more than 20 weekly flights between the US and China and the routes have become a powerful source of growth.

Halfway point in construction of DHL hub

The halfway point at one of Europe’s biggest construction sites: Construction work on DHL’s European hub begun at the start of 2006 is progressing well and is right on schedule. Klaus Zumwinkel, the Chairman of the Board of Management at Deutsche Post World Net, briefed German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Transportation Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee and Saxony Premier Georg Milbradt on the project’s progress during an on-site visit on Tuesday and celebrated “halftime” with representatives from politics, business, arts, culture and media as well as employees.

“The Leipzig/Halle hub will be a vital element within our company. Along with Hong Kong in Asia und Wilmington in the United States, it will be one of the three most important transfer locations in DHL’s global network,” Zumwinkel said. DHL plans to create 3,500 jobs by 2012. Experience has shown that other companies and service providers will then create an additional 7,000 jobs in the region as the result of such a project. Zumwinkel said: “By opening this important location to our Group and investing around EUR300 million, we are taking an important step to bolster the country’s new states and Germany as a business location.”
