DHL to merge Hungarian units

Express delivery company DHL will merge its two units in Hungary next year, DHL Express Magyarorszag marketing manager Joseph Borocz said.

The two units, DHL Express Magyarorszag and DHL Nemzetkozi es Logisztikai, have operated in unison since 2002, when Deutsche Post World Net acquired 100pc of DHL.

DHL Express Magyarorszag had revenue of HUF 17.9bn in 2004. This year the company expects revenue of HUF 19.3bn, and it targets revenue of HUF 20.3bn in 2006. DHL Magyarorszag made 1.3m deliveries in 2004. It expects to make 1.4m this year and 2m in 2006.

DHL Express Magyarorszag started making deliveries outside of Hungary a year ago. Mr Borocz noted that, while just four other companies offer express delivery outside of Hungary — TNT, UPS, FedEx and Magyar Posta — there are hundreds of smaller companies which compete on the market for deliveries inside Hungary.

DHL to set up logistic management school in China

DHL has announced plans to set up its own training institution in China. As well as forming part of the company’s plans for expansion on the fast-growing market, the move will allow DHL to find and keep qualified staff. DHL plans to grow by between 35 and 40 per cent in the coming years in China, but has revealed problems when it comes to finding qualified managers.

The DHL Logistic Management University is therefore to be opened in Shanghai. In the coming year, the university will offer 40 courses for 7,500 students from DHL. Employees of DHL in other areas of Asia, such as South Korea, will also attend the university. Later, the university will open its doors to non-DHL employees. Employee fluctuation levels are high in China, but DHL hopes that the university courses will encourage staff to remain at DHL, as well as providing it with qualified managers.

DHL Kenya goes the Smartcard way

Slow industrial growth in Kenya and rapid changes in technology has forced DHL to shift its focus from cargo handling to retail operations. The change has come at a price, though, as DHL has had to introduce new technology to survive in this new business while easing service delivery and winning client loyalty. The SmartCard service will be officially unveiled early next month, according to the company’s management. The SmartCard system was installed in all the company’s offices in the country at a cost of more than Sh3.7 million (USD50,000). Kenya is the second country after India to install the technology, which will be rolled out to all DHL branches worldwide. The SmartCard, the size of a bank ATM (automated teller machine) card, stores the user’s data and transaction history, meaning that the moment it is inserted in the system all the information will be displayed on the computer monitor, making it easy and fast for the teller to serve the client.

Deutsche Post expands in India with DHL

With bags of optimism and a lot of money, German postal company Deutsche Post is getting into the world’s fasting growing logistics market with its subsidiary DHL.

A key region in their Asian expansion strategy is India, which, like its neighbour China, has high levels of growth. Deutsche Post chairman Klaus Zumwinkel, recently opening a logistics HQ in Bombay, announced increased involvement in India and the whole Asia-Pacific area. Around 250 million dollars is invested there every year.

The Bonn-based company, which already has half of its turnover abroad, is set to become the clear world market leader in logistics (air and sea freight and contract logistics) with the agreed takeover of the British firm Exel. Zumwinkel said the takeover is due to be completed by December. He sees Asia as the engine of growth to cement this leading position.

“Asia is the world’s strongest growth market for us,” he notes.
