DHL Philippines considering online payment service to clients

Courier company DHL Express (Philippines) Corp. is considering offering an online payment service to local customers.

The service is seen to complete the end-to-end e-commerce offer of a company that will address a market that is still slow in using electronic commerce services. The online payment service is being developed in conjunction with the redesign of the website.

The local arm of DHL is currently upgrading its website, which is part of the “rebranding exercise” all DHL operations worldwide are going through as a result of the acquisition of Deutsche Post World Net of DHL International in December 2002.

DHL to spend USD160 million to automate package-sorting operations

In a bid to match US package-delivery rivals in efficiency, DHL Worldwide Express Inc. will invest USD160 million this year in technology that automates the package-sorting process.

The delivery and logistics company, owned by German mail carrier Deutsche Post AG, said it will upgrade automation by 2006 at its facilities in Wilmington, Ohio; Allentown, Pa.; and Riverside, Calif. Some jobs will be cut gradually, the company said.

The investment is part of DHL’s USD1.2 billion U.S. expansion and the company’s bid to become an alternative to United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp.

So far, DHL says it serves just a sliver of the U.S. market, around 6.8 percent.

“This is just another confirmation of the fact that DHL is a key player in the United States,” said Fred Beljaars, executive vice president of operations for DHL Americas.

Postal cooperation between DHL and Yamato going well

Cooperation between Japan’s Yamato Transport and Deutsche Post’s DHL Global Mail is off to a good start, Deutsche Post said in Bonn Thursday, some five months after the two companies began working together.

Deutsche Post said the volume of mail to Japan had increased but did not provide any figures.

At the beginning of November last year, Yamato, one of the leading private providers of mail services in Japan, entered into a cooperation agreement with DHL Global Mail, a global leader in mail services.

The agreement allows the two companies to offer clients joint international mail services in the Japanese market.
