ABX builds non-DHL profits

ABX Air is finding that being independent is increasingly profitable, whether the former Airborne Express airline flies for DHL or not. The company reported a USD37 million net profit in 2004, nearly double the earnings for 2003, as the former Airborne Express air carrier saw revenue edge up to USD1.2 billion. The earnings included an USD18.1 million net profit in the fourth quarter on a 31 percent increase in revenue to USD361.4 million. Those earnings were spurred by an unexpected surge of package volume, up 29 percent over last year’s fourth quarter and 22.2 percent over third quarter 2004 totals. The strong financial report marked an important step in the airline’s path to independence since it was spun off from Airborne in 2003 following DHL’s purchase of the express operator. DHL accounts for the huge majority of ABX’s revenue but the airline said its non-DHL revenue grew from USD11.6 million in 2003 to USD26.7 million last year.

The battle for parcel supremacy

Whenever David Abney looks up from his desk on the executive floor of United Parcel Service’s headquarters in Atlanta, he sees a large map of China mounted on the wall. “I have it right in my line of sight,” he says. “It reminds me and visitors to my office of the size of the place and the opportunity it provides for us.”

As president of the package delivery company’s international business, Mr Abney is quick to stress that Europe, South America and the rest of Asia are also important markets. But the fact that only China is granted its own map shows where his priorities lie.

“China is the largest and most exciting opportunity in the 30 years I’ve been with UPS,” he says. “It’s not a case of ‘should we’ or ‘can we’. If you’re going to be a global company in future you absolutely have to be a player in China.”

Over the past few months, UPS has committed an additional $600m of investment in China as it vies with rivals FedEx, DHL and TNT for leadership of the market.

Garant Post- number one in Russia

Demand for GEP services is growing strongly in Russia, in particular in the Moscow and St Petersburg metropolitan areas. Not only the well-known international CEP service providers are benefiting from these developments, but national companies too. Russia is currently one of the most interesting growth markets in Europe for express service providers too. Number one in the domestic market is Garant Post, a joint venture founded around 15 years ago by the Russian national airline Aeroflot, the French national airline Air France, the French express service provider Chronopost (a subsidiary of the French post office), Sodexi (the Air France CEP subsidiary) and a Russian bank. The Russian post office withdrew from the enterprise last year.
