Transport strike, parcel service demonstration leaves Brussels in gridlock

A public transport strike and a demonstration by employees of DHL led to traffic gridlock in Brussels early Friday. Police closed of several major roads in the city during morning rush hour to accommodate the DHL demonstration, where thousands were expected to protest. With public transport unions also going on strike to demand better working conditions, thousands of people were left stranded in traffic-choked streets. The DHL workers are protesting a decision to move the courier’s international hub away from Brussels as of 2008 in a dispute over excessive noise from night flights.

DHL said leaning toward German hub

The express unit of Deutsche Post World Net reportedly has given up expansion plans at the Brussels airport and is more likely to expand in Leipzig, Germany.
DHL announced last week that the conditions set by Belgian government “regrettably do not allow DHL to create an intercontinental hub at Brussels National Airport.” For now DHL will maintain its current level of activities at the airport but plans to begin moving business to other airports in 2008. DHL will announce within two weeks whether the hub would be established in Leipzig or at Vatry in northern France, said company spokesman Xavier De Buck. Public subsidies that DHL could receive if it opted for Leipzig suggest Germany has an edge over France for the international center.

Polish express market

Of the 51 companies active on the local market, 25 are recent arrivals which registered last year. Despite the increasingly crowded market, all the major operators saw their revenues grow from 20% (Servisco) to 50% (Masterlink).

The exception was Poczta Polska.

“It can compete in terms of price, and its monopoly is a big advantage, but otherwise it would be in trouble,” said Olga Kozierowska of Masterlink. She estimates that PP controls only 4% of the courier market, a figure that experts say is more or less accurate.

Hence the announcement by PP deputy president Andrzej Siniakiewicz that the company plans to take over a courier company by the end of the year. His comment last week came in the wake of a large-scale consolidation process on the market. In 2002, Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) became the sole owner of Servisco, the market leader with a 22% share, of the 99 million (z³. 425 million) a year market for next-day delivery service. DPWN is now planning to offer all its services under the DHL brand.
