Belgian PM writes to DHL to demand fleet upgrade at Brussels airport

Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt has written to express courier company DHL to demand assurances that its air fleet will be modernised if it extends its activities at Brussels airport, Belgian daily Le Soir newspaper reported, citing the prime minister.

Talks between Belgian authorities and DHL over the expansion of Brussels Zaventum airport into DHL’s regional hub have stalled over the disturbance to local residents caused by an increase in night flights.

The main stumbling block, which the federal government hopes is the key to a settlement, is the modernisation of DHL’s fleet of planes to ensure quieter models are used when landing after-dark, Le Soir said.

Deutsche Post shares plummet over North American woes

Deutsche Post shares dropped sharply on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange Wednesday after the company said that its U.S. operations will remain in the red for a year longer than was originally estimated.

The issue has gained center stage over the past two weeks because it highlights the struggle within the government to meet its commitment to increase employment in Belgium, even if doing so may come at the cost of more environmental damage.

DHL’s USD53m tax-credit package gets final ok

The Ohio Tax Credit Authority gave its final approval Monday to the tax-incentive package that lured DHL to move its air cargo sorting operations from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Wilmington, Ohio. The tax deal was initially announced in June.

The Ohio Department of Development said DHL is expected to create 600 new jobs in Wilmington within three years. The company will receive a 90 percent job-creation tax credit for five years and an additional 70 percent credit for 10 years after that. It also gets a 75 percent tax credit for 10 years for retaining 2,886 existing jobs there.
