Hong Kong business awards announced

Winners of Hong Kong Business Awards 2003, co-organized by DHL International (Hong Kong) Limited and South China Morning Post, were announced Thursday.

Four individual winners of the Business Awards include: David Eldon, chairman of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, got the Business Person of the Year 2003 award; David Turnbull, chief executive of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, was named as the winner of the Executive Award; Raymond Tan, executive vice president of Luen Thai International Group Ltd, won the Owner- Operator Award; and Richard Tsang, managing director of the Strategic Financial Relations Limited, won the Young Entrepreneur Award.

Dispute between DHL & US competitors intensifies

The dispute between DHL, the express delivery service owned by Deutsche Post, the German postal service, and its US competitors FedEx and UPS has intensified. UPS and FedEx have accused DHL of having exclusive agreements with two US airlines, Astar and ABX Air, and of controlling these two airlines. However, the two US delivery companies have now been accused of hypocrisy by those in the sector, who claim that their practices in Europe mirror those of DHL in the US: UPS has an exclusive agreement with Danish airline Star Air, while FedEx controls the German airline Express Airways.

DHL begins mid east fleet evaluation to meet growing demand

DHLs plans for the region include new air destinations, improved and new build facilities at regional airports and a total upgrade of DHL’s Middle East air-road network, fleet and services. The news comes as DHL Middle East revealed that in the past 18 months, its regional aircraft fleet has doubled in size from 7 to 14 aircraft. “The review will dovetail with our future needs and plans, which includes a US $10 million infrastructure investment phase currently under way,” said David Wild, General Manager, DHL UAE.

Deutsche Post plans to close depots

Deutsche Post, the German postal service, is planning to merge the depots of Deutsche Post Express, its subsidiary which provides courier services, with those of DHL, the express service which it recently acquired. The plans form part of the programme introduced by Klaus Zumwinkel, the head of Deutsche Post, with the aim of increasing the company’s annual profit by at least 1.4bn euros in comparison with 2002 by 2005.
