DHL resumes flights to Baghdad

The global package delivery service DHL said it has resumed flights to Baghdad last week, six days after one of its planes was hit by a missile on its approach to the airport.

“From the advice we received, it is now a safe environment to fly,” DHL spokeswoman Patricia Thomson told The Associated Press. She said flights to Baghdad International Airport resumed last Friday and the cargo company would “soon try to commence with three flights per day.”

Air Express carriers urge China to further liberalise postal services

The Asian chief executives of the world’s top four air express carriers are to meet in Beijing to show their commitment to the Chinese market and to call for further liberalisation of the country’s express mail services.

During their first ever joint visit to China, the Asian division leaders of DHL, FedEx Corp, United Parcel Service Inc and TNT Express will talk to top Chinese officials, including the Vice-Minister of Commerce Liao Xiaoqi, the executive director of the Conference of Asia Pacific Express Carriers (CAPEC), Ira Wolf, said.

All four are members of CAPEC.

DHL plans €50 million Indian investment

Express and logistics company, DHL Express, plans to invest €50 million in infrastructure in India between 2003 and 2007. The company will set up new express terminals at Mumbai and Chennai airports, apart from investing in service centres and in new vehicles.

DHL's Kuala Lumpur Gateway gets class

DHL says it has obtained an Asia Category ‘A’ certification from the Technology Asset Protection Association (TAPA) for its Kuala Lumpur International Airport Gateway (KLIA Gateway).

TAPA is a non-profit organisation set up by representatives from the manufacturing and high-tech industries, freight forwarders and professional consulting companies. It was established to guarantee high security standards in the freight transportation of high-value technology products to minimise monetary or asset losses incurred due to theft during the shipment process.

The TAPA certification at DHL’s KLIA Gateway is the 21st successful TAPA certification for DHL worlwide.

Air Hong Kong eyes mainland routes

Air Hong Kong, the all-cargo airline owned by Cathay Pacific Airways and DHL, is eyeing express cargo and freighter routes to the mainland.

Air Hong Kong commercial general manager James Tong said: “We are actively looking at the mainland. We are evaluating and studying very closely with DHL and freight forwarders what kind of cargo volumes would be carried.” About 80% of the carrier’s cargo volumes are express shipments from DHL, which owns a 40% stake in Air Hong Kong.
