China's draft postal law triggers protest from foreign deliverers

The amended draft of China’s Postal Law has triggered strong protests from foreign and local private mail delivery companies, and three industry associations have jointly submitted a complaint to China’s legislature.

The draft law version, which came out on November 17, bans overseas and private express mail delivery companies from delivering mail under 500g, and authorizes China Post to decide whether to offer mail delivery business licenses to its competitors.

German Express Mail service suspends flight to Afghanistan

The world’s largest express mail service DHL has announced that it has suspended cargo flights to Afghanistan due to security concerns.

A spokesman for the Deutsche Post, which owns DHL, said that the Bonn-based company is reviewing the situation in Afghanistan before making further decisions.

Deutsche Post aims to boost returns for subsidiary DHL in US

Deutsche Post, the German postal and logistics group, is aiming for the loss-making US business of DHL, its express delivery subsidiary, to achieve a return of at least 4% in a few years’ time. It is hoping for a secure third position on the US express delivery market, behind the two market leaders FedEx and UPS, and, with this aim in mind, it invested €1.05bn in the acquisition of the US company Airborne, which, alone, already ranked third on the US market having achieved turnover of €3.34bn last year. Synergies between Airborne and DHL will be targeted as a step towards improving profitability.

DHL to handle Hitachi's global shipments

Hitachi Ltd. will contract integrated logistics company DHL Japan Inc. to ship audiovisual equipment direct from the factory to customers.

The move is in support of a new Hitachi shipping system designed to reduce inventory.

The system will be implemented in April 2004 solely for shipments of liquid-crystal display projectors to Europe. Hitachi will broaden the system to include all audiovisual products in every global market by March 2006.
