DHL to move British IT jobs

DHL is mulling a cost-saving measure that would shift most of its British information technology operations to Eastern Europe. An internal memo outlined the express carrier’s plans to outsource as many as 350 jobs in the United Kingdom, while jobs at its Basel, Switzerland operation will also be affected, according to a report by British-based ComputerWeekly.com. DHL operates two British datacenters that handle application development, and application and operations support. DHL has 700 IT employees in the U.K., the publication reported.

GB wins appeal against European Court of Human Rights for night flights

A threat to the operations of air cargo and express carriers was lifted after a landmark court ruling that night flights do not violate the human rights of people living near airports. Great Britain won an appeal against a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in 2001 that flights at London Heathrow between 11:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. had violated the rights of people living under the flight path of the world’s busiest international airport by disturbing their sleep. The ruling raised fears of bans across Europe that would hit all-cargo airlines and express carriers like DHL, United Parcel Service and FedEx Corp., which mostly fly at night.

DHL Plans Large Terminal at Incheon, S. Korea

DHL, the air express distribution company, “is planning to build a large-scale freight terminal at Incheon International Airport by the end of 2005 for use as its Northeast Asian logistics hub, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation said Tuesday. The freight terminal project, recently approved by the ministry-affiliated Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), will make DHL the first multinational company to build a regional logistics hub in South Korea.

DHL’s Moscow-based executives say Deutsche Post World Net’s plans to bring its different courier-delivery and logistics companies together under the DHL brand name will bode well for their clients in the C.I.S. and Baltic states.

The announcement was made last week in Moscow during the official presentation of the rebranding program.
