Carriers Ask for U.S. Govt. Investigation of DHL

United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp. have asked the federal government [U.S.] to reopen a probe of the ownership structure of rival DHL Worldwide Express, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The latest moves are aimed at bringing attention to the complicated ownership structure of DHL, the largest air-express courier outside the U.S., the paper said. The requests were made last week in separate filings with the Department of Transportation, and indicate the two are uniting forces against German delivery giant Deutsche Post AG.

Customs-clearing tax in Thailand draws fire

A change in the fees charged for customs-clearing services in Thailand was announced in July 2002. The air express industry believes that the change in policy represents a breach of the commitments of Thailand to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), because the Thai Department of Customs did not consult with the industry prior to changing the fees. A formal complaint was submitted to the Thai Ministry of Finance by the Conference of Asia Pacific Express Carriers. DHL Worldwide Express and TPG (TNT Post) are two of the members of that organisation. Federal Express Corporation and United Parcel Service have also complained about the adoption of overtime taxes for customs-clearing services outside of standard working hours.

DHL set to land airport base in Hong Kong

DHL Worldwide Express, the international courier company, is believed to be days away from signing a deal with the Airport Authority for the development of an express terminal at Chek Lap Kok.
The agreement will pave the way for DHL and Cathay Pacific Airways to announce later a joint airfreight initiative under which Air Hong Kong will operate cargo flights within Asia on behalf of DHL.
Cathay has already leased its first Airbus A300B4 freighter from US leasing specialist Express.Net Airlines that will be used by Air Hong Kong.
The lease agreement started at the end of June and lasts for 15 months.

Transtar deal will see firm stick to its roots

FREIGHT forwarding firm Transtar has been bought by its management in a deal backed by a fund designed to strengthen commerce and create jobs in South Yorkshire.
Lee Bolsover and Jayne Wilkinson, who have been at the firm for the past 10 years, secured an investment of GBP500,000 from the South Yorkshire Investment Fund (SYIF).
Transtar works with suppliers such as DHL to offer freight forwarding services throughout the world. The deal, for an undisclosed sum, was financed through a mix of loans and equity supported by a facility from Royal Bank of Scotland.
