Forgoing Monopoly

The first phase of deregulation intended to open up 30 per cent of Royal Mail’s letter market to competition is under way. While it is far too early to say how much impact this has had, a question that does need addressing is how direct mailers are going to respond. Will they be looking to switch to other postal carriers? Will they be able to adopt a more flexible approach to their mailing schedules? And what will be the best way to buy in this new, competitive environment? A number of mailing houses remain wary of new postal carriers entering the market, and from what they have seen so far, cannot see them persuading mailers to switch from Royal Mail.

Watchdog slams UK Royal Mail over Home Mover offensive

Watchdog Postwatch has attacked Royal Mail over a new service which allows brand owners to surreptitiously piggyback the Home Movers Service. The new scheme, currently on trial, will give Royal Mail an extra revenue stream. It allows companies to use the same envelopes as the Home Movers Service, although they will not contain the redirected post. Royal Mail plans to charge marketers around 68p per insert, with further negotiations for bulk mailings. Postwatch says it has not been notified about the new service and is unimpressed with the move.

TPG acquires German unaddressed mail distributor blitzpunkt

TPG has acquired a 100% stake in blitzpunkt GmbH (blitzpunkt), an unaddressed mail distribution company based in eastern Germany. blitzpunkt had revenues of around EUR 10 million in 200. It delivers 355 million leaflets and 19 million free newspapers per year. The company gives TPG Post access to 8,000 round-based deliverers offering full coverage to over 1.9 million households in the Saxony and East Thuringia(Gera) regions in the former East Germany. The acquisition also establishes a stepping stone for further regional expansion.

Booming Metromail seals new contract

Direct mail specialist Metromail has taken on an extra 50 staff in the past six months and has just announced a new six-figure contract.

The Peterlee-based company now employs 270 people and aims to take on another 50 soon.

Its new contract has been secured with gardening supplies company Plantiflor, which will mean Metromail sending out an extra 10m mailing packs a year, on top of its current 175m total.
