UK Post Office Chairman defends stance

Post Office Chairman Allan Leighton has defended his tough stance over striking postal workers and plans to close up to 2,500 post offices over the next year.

Tough talk from Allan LeightonSpeaking to Sky News’ Jeff Randall on Jeff Randall Live, Mr Leighton said it was all about modernization.

“We’re a business that’s now in a commercial world, we’ve got real competition, we’re not a monopoly any more and we can’t keep going back to the tax payer and asking for money, that’s the one thing we don’t want to do.

“We’re relatively inefficient compared with our competitors… our competition has been doing what we should be doing for 10 years.”

When asked if he was prepared to compromise, Mr Leighton said a deal had to be done in the interests of the company.

“This is about the future of the Royal Mail… it is at a tipping point… the Mail’s business is under intense pressure and we’ve got to build a company for the future.”

Meanwhile, public consultations are starting on plans to close the post offices next year.

Customers in Kent, East Midlands and East Yorkshire will be asked for their views on proposals to close 180 branches in their areas.

It would start a period of “huge change” in the post office network, said consumer watchdog Postwatch.

“Closures are not good news for customers, but the current post office network is unsustainable,” said Chairwoman Millie Banerjee.

DHL develops customer loyalty programme

DHL has enhanced its customer loyalty programme in the Middle East, allowing clients to receive award points for every dirham spent on the logistics company’s products and services.

Customers can enrol on the loyalty programme, titled Altitude, for free and redeem their points at a number of outlets, including City Centre in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. Alternatively, the award points can be donated to non-government organisations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Dubai Centre for Special Needs (DCSN) or Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

“With Altitude all our loyal customers will now be rewarded for every dirham they spend on DHL’s products and services. Previously, customers who registered under the programme were rewarded on parcel shipments only. It will now be across the complete DHL product range,” said Elliott Santon, marketing manager, DHL UAE.

“Our customer loyalty programme was launched in 2003. The rewards options for members now include a wide variety of choices, ranging from jewellery, electronics, office supplies, gift vouchers and, of course, greater discounts on DHL products and services,” he added.

Local consultation starts on changes to UK Post Office network

Post Office Ltd today opened the first local public consultations on changes to the Post Office network needed to meet Government requirements. Proposals for the future provision of Post Office services in three areas of the UK – Kent, the East Midlands and East Yorkshire with Bassetlaw and North Lincolnshire – have been published today and will remain open for consultation for six weeks until 12 November 2007.
Under each of the Area Plan Proposals published today more than 99 pct of the population will either see no change to their nearest branch, or will remain within one mile (by road distance) of an alternative branch.
Post Office Ltd is seeking views on the proposed future service provision in these areas, including, in particular, views on access to Post Office services, the accessibility of alternative branches to those proposed for closure and the appropriate form of outreach service to be provided. The Government has already undertaken a 12 week national consultation before reaching a decision to reduce the UK wide network of Post Office branches by up to 2,500 from its current level of over 14,000, while continuing to provide funding (subject to EU state aid clearance) to support a more sustainable network in the future.

Post workers set to strike up to 48 hrs

Australian Post workers are set to strike if their claim for a better deal on wages and conditions is rejected.

More than 10,000 staff took part in a ballot, with about three quarters supporting industrial action.

Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) national president Ed Husic said workers would roll out work bans and stoppages if Australia Post refused to negotiate over a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA).

He said the union wrote to Australia Post yesterday asking them to return to the negotiating table.

Australia Post last month announced an immediate four per cent pay rise for its employees, rising to 12 per cent over two-and-a-half years.

But the union wants five per cent guaranteed in the first year.

It also wants penalty rates and job security conditions protected and an independent umpire to enforce the EBA.

Australia Post has said the offer was well above inflation and would lock in entitlements and award conditions.

If Australia Post refuses to resume wage talks, workers will start rolling four hour, 24 hour and 48 hour stoppages.

They will also introduce bans on overtime and the checking and collection of unpaid mail.

Mr. Husic has not set a deadline for strike action and was hopeful the dispute could be resolved in days not weeks.
