Israel Post: Rate hike 'premature,' Postal Co. claims

Although the finance and communications minister signed and announced a document Monday that supposedly raises postal rates, the Israel Postal Company said it was “premature as discussions on new services and rates have not yet been concluded.”

The Treasury did not say what the new rates would be, but stated that when they come into effect, the agreement would constitute “the final stage in significant reform carried out in the postal sector in recent years.”

The Israel Postal Company, which until last year was a state authority under direct control by the Communications Ministry, is facing a growing amount of competition due to loss of its monopoly powers. In compensation, it is being allowed to offer additional services to compete with the private market.

The Postal Company spokeswoman said discussions of the general license, which empowers the company to offer new services, have not yet concluded.

“There are still some open issues. Although there is progress in the negotiations, the final form of the license has not yet been agreed upon,” she said. “We are sorry that the notice of a signing was released unilaterally, without consulting the Postal Company. We have been working without a general license since the company was established, a problem that prevents the company from planning its future policy and to improve its services to the public,” she added.

PIN, TNT Germany create employers' association to fend off German postal minimum wages

PIN Group AG and TNT NV’s TNT Post Germany have founded a new employers’ association to scupper a minimum wage of 9-10 eur sought by rival Deutsche Post World Net AG, PIN’s chief executive Guenter Thiel told Focus magazine.
He said the existing employers’ association headed by former Deutsche Post management board member Wolfhard Bender does not represent the whole industry’s interest, but only those of Deutsche Post.
‘I’m pro minimum wages, but (I’m) contra a dictate by monopoly company Deutsche Post,’ TNT Post Germany’s chief executive Mario Frusch told Focus magazine.
The two companies also plan to include publishing houses in the new association, whose distribution networks Deutsche Post’s competitors could use in the future.
Luxembourg-based PIN Group is 71.6 pct-owned by Axel Springer.

Hunt for new Royal Mail boss called off

The search for a successor to Allan Leighton, the chairman of Royal Mail, has been abandoned by the Government.

Allan Leighton’s term as chairman of Royal Mail ends next March;

The move follows attempts to persuade a number of high-profile businessmen to accept the job.

Whitehall sources insisted the decision had nothing to do with the failure to find a replacement. Instead, they said, the priority had been to strengthen the board in other ways, such as through the appointment of non-executive directors, and added that the search could be resurrected.

The Government first advertised for the position of deputy chairman last autumn in what was widely seen as a precursor to appointing a successor to Leighton. However, approaches to several businessmen, including Sir Philip Hampton, the chairman of J Sainsbury, and Sir John Parker, the chairman of National Grid, failed. Hampton was widely seen as the frontrunner but it is believed he rejected the offer as the Government refused to commit itself to a full privatization of the organization. Leighton’s term ends next March and it is believed he would be happy to stay on for a third term.
