Consignia announces 15,000 job losses in the first phase of its re-structuring with significant further job losses to follow. Consignia will shed 40,000 of its 200,000 staff under rapidly escalating plans to save the state-owned UK post office group from a financial crisis. Ministers are expected to come under pressure to justify the radical proposals, as the target disclosed for job losses mounted steadily. The first stage of a restructuring focuses on the loss-making parcels division, Parcelforce.

Consignia has announced the first stage of its recovery plan involving the restructure of the parcels business, rationalisation of transport operations giving combined cost savings of £460 million. Further management, support service and operational savings are also identified. 15,000 jobs will go, 13,000 through redeployment or redundancy. Consignia will restructure its loss making parcels and express business Parcelforce Worldwide, and make radical changes to its internal logistics and transport networks as the first moves in a three year renewal programme to cut costs by more than £1.2 billion and provide a secure long term foundation for the company and for universal postal services in the UK.
