U.S. Postmaster General cautions of perfect economic storm

Postmaster General John E. Potter challenged the mailing industry, cautioning mailers about the severity of the current economic climate and urging them to create new growth opportunities.

Citing fluctuating oil prices, inflation in paper prices and the strife in the financial markets, Potter described challenging economic conditions as the most difficult time since the 1960s. The additional move of hardcopy messages to the Internet and questions about mail’s environmental impact have led to a volume decline of 9 billion pieces this year.

Despite the tough times, Potter called on the mailing industry to seek new sources of growth.

Despite the challenges ahead, Potter remains confident in the strength and commitment of the Postal Service and the mailing industry as a whole.

The Postmaster General’s comments came during the national Postal Customer Council (PCC) Day broadcast, an annual event that brings mailers, industry partners and customers together to recognize their contributions to the Postal Service and outline future plans and goals.

To help keep the lines of communication open, the Postal Service has launched the first official postal blog at 2blogPCC.com. Customers can discuss important topics facing the mailing industry, access the latest information and provide feedback.

DHL Global Mail expands Parcel Plus offering (U.S)

DHL Global Mail announced the expansion of its Smartmail Parcel Plus service to include packages weighing up to 10 lbs.

With this new weight limit, Parcel Plus now offers e-tailers and other high-volume mailers a more cost-effective alternative to traditional courier options for residential delivery. That means more companies can save without sacrificing speed, since Parcel Plus transit times remain highly competitive (2-5 day average for Expedited service, or 5-10 days for Budget). And Parcel Plus continues to provide the businesses demand, thanks to DHL Global Mail’s network and workshare partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, which handles final-mile delivery.

The expanded Parcel Plus service is available effective September 1, 2008.

Royal Mail confident over deliveries despite proposed strike

Royal Mail has said it is “confident” that its letters services “will be maintained” if the Communication Workers Union (CWU) goes ahead with a proposed three-day strike beginning next Tuesday (23 September).
The strikes, which are due to begin at 6am on 23 September and finish at 6am on 26 September, cover staff employed by Romec that work in technical grades including electronic security and buildings maintenance engineers.

The engineers are threatening to strike over changes being imposed on attendance patterns.

However, a spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail is confident that its letters services will be maintained should any industrial action by Romec go ahead and we are working closely with Romec to ensure back-up services for the entire mail operation are maintained.”

Industrial action by Royal Mail is estimated to have cost the direct mail industry around GBP 8m in 2007.

Postal chief lifts hopes by ruling out price hikes

Hong Kong Post has no plans to increase charges.

Postmaster General Tam Wing-pong made the promise while reporting last year’s total postal volume increased 6percent, netting a profit of about HKD 400 million.

The registered airmail service recorded the highest increase – 21 percent.

But Tam estimated that both figures would shrink, though not significantly, in the coming year given economic fluctuations and fierce competition.

With soaring oil prices and international calls to increase terminal dues, Tam said there is pressure to raise postal charges, and warned that the HKD 470 million 2006-07 profit would shrink to HKD 400 million for the next period.

Tam added that Hong Kong Post will develop other revenue streams such as e-commerce.

To maintain postal volume, Hongkong Post will spend about HKD 2 million on a one-stop e-commerce platform in November when customers may buy products from recognized retailers, with the department providing postal services such as logistics and mail delivery.

Tam hopes to attract customers from all over the world to services and products that will be retailed by small and medium-sized enterprises.

Hongkong Post will also try out automatic mailing machines in certain post offices.

Hongkong Post this year distributed 31 million promotion leaflets on the Legislative Council election.
