DHL Sweden company cars to be eco-friendly

DHL Sweden will invest in a fleet of company cars consisting entirely of environmentally friendly vehicles. The current fleet consists of 439 vehicles, of which 44 percent already run on alternative fuels. This is the start of a long line of environmental projects as part of GOGREEN, DHL’s global environmental program.

The intention is that by 2020 at the latest, DHL will have reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent in comparison to 2007 levels.

Currently DHL in Sweden has a total of 439 company cars, of which 193, or approximately 44 percent, are clean cars. Common environmentally friendly models within the DHL company car fleet are the SAAB 9-3 BioPower, the SAAB 9-5 BioPower and the Volvo V70 Flexifuel.

DHL is to use the Vägverket (Swedish National Road Administration) list of environmentally friendly vehicles, and from now on all company cars that are leased out to employees must be environmentally friendly. Within three years at the very latest, current non-environmentally friendly company cars should also have been replaced with alternatives that meet stricter environmental requirements.

USPS stats put FedEx & UPS at risk

The number of parcels and packages that postal workers are toting around the country has declined sharply, according to government statistics, opening the prospect of fresh liabilities for the U.S. Postal Service’s private-enterprise rivals, analysts said.

According to the data, challenging economic conditions, the end of stimulus checks, and inflation in fuel prices have contributed to a pronounced sell off in package deliveries. Express mail shipments fell 14 pct in the quarter that ended in June, the most recent data available. Priority mail shipments declined 6 pct in the period. The pullback could have direct implications for FedEx, which has made as much as USD1.2 billion a year flying priority mail packages for the USPS. But there are threats to the franchises of FedEx as well as United Parcel Service (UPS) simply from industry pressures. The USPS data suggested that package shippers have gotten more cost-conscious about their shipping activities. FedEx’s May quarter showed that daily domestic air freight declined about 15 pct, including its priority shipping business. Nevertheless, both FedEx and UPS have ticked up about 1 pct in Wednesday’s trading (27th August).

UK parcels carrier Amtrak stops trading

Amtrak has suddenly stopped trading, leaving up to 900 employees facing redundancy and customers waiting for deliveries. It is the second time within two years that the company has hit financial difficulties and had to go into administration.

In a brief statement posted on its website, the company stated: “Netfold Limited, trading as Amtrak, went into administration on 22 August 2008 and has ceased trading. Should you have any parcel collection or delivery requirements, you may contact Business Post Limited, which will be happy to provide an alternative service.”

Accountancy firm Ernst & Young issued a statement saying that it was appointed as the company’s financial administrator by the directors of Netfold Ltd on August 22. One of the joint administrators from Ernst & Young commented: “Amtrak has found trading in the current economic climate challenging. It is a business led by consumer demand and as consumer spending power has weakened Amtrak’s business has suffered. We are currently assessing the financial situation of the business, and as a result the collection and delivery of goods may be disrupted.”

British newspaper The Independent reported today that customers were waiting for deliveries of goods such as wine, beds and televisions, and noted that the company has a contract to carry mail between government departments.

DHL moves into packaging compliance

DHL Exel Supply Chain has launched its own packaging compliance scheme. This system complements its packaging waste data services, which allow customers to calculate their annual packaging weight obligation.

Head of environmental and compliance solutions Sean Hodges said that the service was added because of customer demand. This will be the second compliance scheme that DHL has launched – it already operates a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compliance scheme.

Hodges said that people were sceptical at first when DHL moved into WEEE. He said the firm operated a WEEE scheme because the company was initially led by legislation, has “a lot of logistical services” and carries a lot of “electrical goods around the country to recyclers”.

He hopes that the “success” that DHL has had in meeting the obligations of members of its WEEE scheme will be replicated through the new packaging compliance scheme.

City Link is not cutting wage bill

City Link has come out fighting against suggestions that it has been trying to cut its wage bill by around GBP 4m to remain profitable. Sources in the industry contacted CM to say some staff at the firm had taken a wage cut and others had been made redundant following the company’s merger with Target Express last year.

However, City Link sales and marketing director Stuart Godman insists the company has not cut its wage bill, and has only made a few redundancies following the merger with Target.

“I can categorically deny the suggestion that anyone has been asked to take a pay cut in our business,” he says.

“In fact, we are continuing to invest in the business, and will open a number of new depots over the coming months. New depots will open at Worcester, Norwich, Coventry and Stoke by October, and the Cwmbran depot will be refurbished and the Oxford depot extended.”

Godman adds: “In any situation where companies come together, which in our case is the Target Express and City Link brands, it is inevitable that there will be duplication of roles, which result in sporadic redundancies as well as the need in certain regions to either consolidate or relocate depot locations.”
