NetDespatch web portal to revolutionise Manx parcel deliveriesDocument Actions

The Isle of Man’s distribution company, Manxx Independent Carriers, is rolling out an innovative system for tracking parcels and freight using a new international ‘databank’ called PODXchange. Developed by NetDespatch, PODXchange is a web portal for proof of delivery (POD).

Manx drivers are being equipped with special mobile devices incorporating barcode scanners and a touchsceen. When deliveries are made and signed for, details of the shipment held in the barcode can be transmitted live to the web portal along with the captured electronic signature. Scan and POD data as well as signatures is then transformed into the appropriate carrier format and transmitted to Manx’s customers that include most major UK parcel carriers.

The portal accepts data from any POD system – for any parcel – and then makes it available via the Internet to any carrier. Manx is already delivering on behalf of all the major parcel carriers including Fedex, UPS, DPD, Citylink, Parcelnet and Amtrak. Using one device, Manx can now provide a live signature POD to any of these companies. The intelligent system recognises the carrier from the barcode on the parcel ensuring that each carrier only retrieves data on their own parcels.

First used in the Highlands of Scotland for parcel deliveries handled by AJG, the system is being implemented by Manx so that is can be used for all types of deliveries. “We travelled to Inverness to see the first PODXchange implementation in action with courier firm AJG parcels. It was immediately evident that it had real potential and we realised we could develop the first true multi-service POD solution giving our customers live updates on anything we delivered whether a parcel, pallet, an item of plant or a fresh food delivery,” says Coleman.

DPD launches new modeshift campaign

DPD has launched a new modeshift campaign promoting its product DPD Classic and committing itsself to sustainable development under the slogan “Why fly parcels in Europe?”.

As part of the new campaign, the multi-language website www.whyflyparcels.com represents different aspects of DPD’s sustainability strategy introducing the modeshift concept as well as the ECO Calculator. This web-based calculator which calculates the CO2-equiv. emissions representing all green house gases produced during the transportation of package consignments by road and in the air.

The company’s strategy for ecologically and economically sound trade is helping shippers make a better choice. With whyflyparcels.com DPD shows that flying parcels within Europe can create up to eight times more CO2 equiv. although air freight remains the ideal method of transport for goods are required urgently such as relief supplies, high-value goods or spare parts that need to be transported over great distances. The company points out that there are numerous non time-critical goods and that could easily be transported by road and not by air.

The ECO Calculator allows customers to compare the effects of the two transport modes by road and by air on climate change. The simulation is based on a totally virtual network and uses data to reflect the reality in a best possible way. It has been supported and assisted by an independent sustainable development agency O2 France relying upon expert sustainable development knowledge.

DPD extends Baltic market leadership with new depot

DPD is expanding capacity for its fast-growing business in the Baltic region with a new depot at the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda for international imports to be distributed in Eastern Europe and the CIS region.

In 2007, DPD increased its import volumes to the Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia by 40 pct to around ten million parcels. This helped the GeoPost subsidiary to expand its CEP market share in the Baltics from 23 pct to 28 pct. In domestic shipping within the Baltic States the three companies DPD Latvija, DPD Lietuva and DPD Eesti have a market share of as much as 46 pct.

In order to cope with this volume growth, DPD opened a parcel sorting centre in the free-trade zone of the port of Klaipeda in western Lithuania in May. The depot has a total of 46 loading bays and its current capacity is 2,000 parcels an hour, which can however be expanded substantially. The centre is intended specifically to handle the rising volumes of international shipments which arrive at Klaipeda by sea and by rail from all around the world.

DPD said that it has grown strongly in the Baltic region in recent years. It has established a rapidly growing network, based on an operational infrastructure featuring three hubs, 29 depots and a fleet of 540 vehicles. Within the three countries DPD has a workforce of 750 employees backed up by self-employed transport operators. In Riga the company opened the largest sorting centre of the whole Baltic region only last year, with a sorting capacity of 6,000 parcels an hour.
