First stone laid at DPD Masterlinks new hub in Gdansk

With the symbolic act of signing the foundation document by Rafal Nawloka – DPD Masterlink President, Robert Karczewski – REX-BUD President the general contractor and Leszek Grombala – local mayor, the construction of the new depot officially started. Opening of the hub is scheduled for September 2007.

The depot is going to be built in two phases. The first one involves building the surface area of 2946 square meters, 55 gates and 11 reloading ramps. The second phase will be completed, when the operational surface of the first phase will prove to be insufficient.

Currently, 120 people are employed in the Gdansk depot. However the company plans to increase staff, ultimately to reach the number of 150 couriers and 50 workers.

The companys dynamic growth triggers the need for investments. The constant increase in the amount of parcels, annually reaching 40 percent, requires the modernization of existing and creation of new infrastructure in whole of the country.

Rafal Nawloka, DPD Masterlink President said: By establishing a new hub in Gdansk the company implements its new operations strategy, which focuses on the creation of a couple sorting centers in Poland. The benefits, in opposition to a centralized operational model, concern higher effectiveness and security of operations. Hubs will be located in Gdansk, Warsaw, Poznan, Katowice and Lodz.

DPD defends Austrian B2B parcel market leadership

DPD has successfully defended its leadership of the Austrian B2B parcels market despite the efforts of expanding Austrian Post to win a sizeable chunk of the market.

DPD Austria has announced that it increased turnover by 6.4% to EUR 132.2 million in 2006, which kept it at the head of the B2B parcels market. DPD carried 34.2 million parcels in Austria last year, which was an increase of 8.2%. About 70% of these volumes were domestic, and 30% were international.

Key success factors were the carrier’s strong regional presence with 13 depots and performance quality of 98% for transit time reliability. “Our regional expertise makes us into a strong partner for our customers,” said managing director Georg Karoh.

For 2007, DPD Austria is targeting turnover growth of 2.5% and a volume increase of 4.5%. The carrier will be putting a special focus on neighbouring Eastern European countries as well as the new EU members Romania and Bulgaria. The carrier has 1,400 employees and 900 vehicles.

DPD Masterlink investment plans for 2007

DPD Masterlink investment plans for 2007 are expected to total 6 million euro. At the beginning of spring the company plans to set up a new, 5,000 square metre depot in Gdansk. This investment will cost approximately 2.5 million euro. The new depot will be built in compliance with the company’s strategy of seeking to purchase properties when establishing new branches, instead of renting the existing infrastructure. The costs of the investments planned for 2007 will be covered partially from the company’s own capital and through leasing agreements.

Employee numbers are also expected to continue to grow. At the end of 2006 DPD Masterlink employed 3,600 people. By the end of 2007 total employee numbers are expected to rise to around 5,000.

European ''emerging markets'' come into focus

Against the background of moderate growth and increasing consolidation in mature Western European markets such as Germany, Britain and France, “emerging markets” such as Spain, Poland, Russia and Turkey are increasingly coming into focus for international express and parcel operators. In contrast to the moderate single-digit growth rates in core European markets, the continent’s smaller markets are growing at high single-digit or double-digit rates and offer attractive areas for expansion. More acquisitions can be expected in these markets during 2007.

Germany, France and Britain jointly account for over half of the total European express and parcel market, according to CEP-Research data. The “Big Three” are the home markets or major regions for carriers such as DHL, TNT, GeoPost/DPD, GLS and UPS. But the market growth rates have slowed significantly in recent years, mostly due to low economic growth, and operational costs are rising. The inevitable result is tougher competition between the market leaders and a clear trend towards market consolidation.

Record growth for DPD Masterlink in 2006

In 2006 Masterlink registered a record growth of volumes – 12,2 million parcels delivered. This figure represents an approximate 50% rise in comparison with 2005. This increase is also reflected in the growth of turnover by 40%.

Since the beginning of 2006 investments began in operational and IT infrastructure of DPD Masterlink. This resulted in the establishment of a second depot in Warsaw, enlargement of the company’s headquarters by further warehouse and office areas and expansion of the Katowice depot area and the modernization of other existing branches in the country. Simultaneously, the company invested in necessary warehouse equipment, conveyor belts and IT systems.
For the second year in a row the company registered growth three times bigger than the market, without jeopardising its commitment to maintaining a high quality of service. The future plans will see continued growth with further investments in the infrastructure. Rafal Nawloka, DPD Masterlink President, predicts that the finalization of the first phase of investments in operational infrastructure will occur in 2010.
The change of the legal name of the company is the last step in the transition phase of the two brands coexistence. Thanks to this change Masterlink will be able to build a new international image, as well as compete more effectively on the market and increase its share in the international parcels segment.
