The Future of Retail: a 2010 Vision, a report commissioned by Royal Mail, reveals vast potential growth for the multi-channel retail sector, but warns that retailers need to double their spend in technology to support multi-channel operations or risk threatening future growth of the sector.

The research, published today, was undertaken by a range of authoritative retail experts to offer retailers an insight on the multi-channel retail landscape and predictions into the future development of the industry.

USPS research shows direct mail drives online sales

The US Postal Service today unveiled the key findings of an independent study showing a positive relationship between Direct Mail and Internet sales. “The Multi-Channel Catalog Study” demonstrates that catalogs drive Internet sales and benefit retailers by enhancing business growth. Among other findings, the study revealed that 15 percent of consumers who receive a catalog and visit the cataloger’s web site make an online purchase. The study was conducted for the Postal Service by comScore Networks, Inc.

Home Shopping Opportunity Missed

A new report on Home Shopping from Mintel’s Retail Intelligence argues that retailers are missing out on a big opportunity in home shopping. However, the study finds the European home shopping sector continuing to lose retail share, with the few areas of sector growth failing to offset the slow declining big book mail order sector. While overall retail sales are predicted to grow by 16% between 2000 and 2005, mail order is expected to show an increase of just 8.2%, representing 2.7% of total retail sales in Europe by 2005. British shoppers are spending more per capita on home shopping than any other European country.

Brazil Post nears online shopping mall launch

Correios, the Brazilian post office, is gearing up to open an online shopping ma where small and mid-sized local companies can set up affordable storefronts.

Dubbed CorreiosNet Shopping, the new virtual mall should launch either this mont or next depending on what the post’s top brass decides.

Correios officials say that the online mall has been designed to provide all the technical, commercial and logistical infrastructure required to operate a reliab high-quality, secure, low-cost e-business.

A new substantial customer for Business Post

Business Post Group PLC, one of the UK’s leading express delivery companies, announces that its Express business has reached agreement to act as sole carrier for Systemax Europe Limited with immediate effect.
Systemax, which trades in the UK as Globaldirect, Misco and Simply Computers, is a supplier of computer hardware, software and peripherals. The distribution warehouse for Systemax is based in Greenock, Scotland. The account, which is estimated to have an annual value of over £3.5 million, will be handled by Business Post’s Glasgow depot.
