Estonia may levy 5pct VAT on postal services

Estonia agrees with the European Council’s position concerning the harmonization of the tariffs of postal services, which may result in the addition of five percent VAT to the price of postal services in Estonia. The ministry admits that if the plan is carried out it may lead to an increase in the price of universal postal service by the VAT rate. Estonia is levying no VAT on postal services now.

According to a policy paper drafted at the Ministry of Finance, Estonia is in favor of taxation of postal services with VAT on a uniform basis and application of as few exceptions as possible. Lifting the tax exemption for the universal postal service would be conducive to achieving this, the Estonian ministry finds. The Estonian position will be presented to the government by Finance Minister Taavi Veskimagi on Thursday

A new EEC Directive on working hours will cause serious security issues for the parcel industry

Trying to keep up with the myriad EEC Directives, which are constantly spawned from the Brussels hotbed of activity, is causing a nightmare for every UK industry sector. Logistics companies will not be spared the sea of paperwork as a new EEC Directive on working hours is proposed.
John Pritchard, Head of Security at Tipton based Nightspeed Secure Worldwide Express is concerned about the issues of security that the proposed new legislation will jeopardise.
He said: “If the 48 hour a week rule is inflicted on to parcel carriers it will mean taking on more staff. The parcel industry as a whole has a high turnover of drivers and warehouse staff and there is already a shortage of personnel.”
