Transport Intelligence Ltd: TI Logistics Briefing & News: Wincanton buys home delivery specialist

Consolidation in the UK logistics market is continuing. European supply chain provider Wincanton has acquired Lane Group plc, a UK market leader in home delivery. The acquisition will allow Wincanton to strengthen its position within the fast growing home delivery market.

Wincanton’s existing home delivery customers such as B&Q and Comet will be added to by Lane’s customer base which includes brands and retailers Homebase, Magnet, Electrolux and Bosch.

Martin Taylor, Managing Director of Retail, Wincanton, says: “The opportunities available to Wincanton as a result of the acquisition of Lane are significant and the company’s operation provides a good strategic fit.

“The home delivery market is a growing one, estimated to be worth GBP37.1bn during 2005, driven by the growth in internet shopping and multi-channel retailing. However, this is a sector that is ripe for improvement as the demands on home delivery operations become increasingly complex and smaller companies find it difficult to respond.

Managing Director of Lane Group plc Rebecca Jenkins said, “This is an exciting opportunity for Lane Group. Both Lane and Wincanton have a strong reputation for providing high quality customer service and with Wincanton’s plans to expand further into the home delivery market the acquisition has provided a natural business development and one that I am very positive about.”

Government must decide quickly the future of a Post Office Network that is 'at the crossroads'

Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services, today urged the Government to make the tough and overdue decisions needed to plan the future of the Post Office network. The Government must take into account the wider social role played by Post Offices in local communities as well as the imperative of establishing a sustainable, stable business.

Postcomm does not regulate Post Offices but it does monitor and research developments in the network of over 14,000 offices and provides independent advice to the Government in the form of an annual report which is published today, entitled “Post Offices at the crossroads”.

Research for Postcomm has provided clear evidence on why Post Offices urgently need a direction from the Government to secure their future. Postcomm believes that keeping things as they are is not an option.

German express courier GO could target government-to-government mail in Hungary next year

German express courier GO could target the government-to-government (G2G) postal market in Hungary next year, Client Manager Peter Pesztericz told Interfax on Thursday.

“This [the G2G] postal market is a difficult niche to get into because of the heightened security requirements, but it is a market we could look at towards the middle of next year,” said Pesztericz.

G2G mail in Hungary is currently organized through a combination of government couriers and the regular postal service, Pesztericz said, adding that the former is expensive while the latter can be inefficient and is sometimes unreliable.

The G2G postal market in Hungary is relatively small, accounting for about 1 per cent of the total but can be lucrative given the special requirements that pertain in this sector, GO’s International Director Wolf-Rudiger May said.

GO is starting in the G2G market in Austria and Germany and already ships restricted documents for the EU from Brussels to Strasbourg along closed routes, according to May.
