Howard Webber: New Chief Executive of Postwatch

Postwatch, the watchdog for postal services, is pleased to announce that Howard Webber will take up the post of Chief Executive on Wednesday 25 October. Howard was until recently the Chief Executive of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

Millie Banerjee, Chair of Postwatch, welcoming Howard Webber’s appointment said: “I am delighted we have been able to attract a candidate of Howard’s calibre and look forward to working with him on the challenges ahead.”

Howard will be the Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of Postwatch.

Howard has worked in many parts of the public sector. For the past seven years he has been Chief Executive of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. Previously he spent a number of years at the Arts Council, running a grant programme and as Head of Policy and Planning, and at the Home Office was responsible for relations with the voluntary and community sector.

Amtrak secures government parcel distribution deal

Amtrak Express Parcels, the franchised overnight parcels network, has formed a partnership with Government to deliver mail and parcels nationwide on behalf of government departments, agencies and associates. Part of a five-year contract with the Government Car and Despatch Agency (GCDA), Amtrak will be providing a full range of next day services.
The GCDA’s InterDespatch Service (IDS) already provides distribution and mail related services for government and the wider public sector; mainly carrying mail between different government agencies and departments. The Amtrak partnership will allow IDS to expand its services to meet all of the nationwide delivery requirements of government as part of a new one-stop-shop service.

CTT Correios de Portugal concludes counter automation of Correios de Cabo Verde

CTT Correios de Portugal has concluded last July the Cape Verde Posts counter network automation with the installation of a front and back office system identical to the one used in Portugal. This project was developed with the participation of local teams. CTT staff provided the required hard and software and know how transfer to the staff of Cape Verde Posts.

The automation of 80% of the country’s post offices network, shall contribute to the modernization of the postal network and enhance the business opportunities, namely in the area of the financial services.

CTT Correios de Portugal raises profits in the first half year of 2006

CTT Correios de Portugal increased its profits in the first six months by 23.5 per cent to EUR 8,5 million. ROE was 12 per cent, more 2 per cent compared with the previous year. Though these good financial results, the mail volumes decreased around 4 per cent comparing with last years’ same period.

These results were due to “a strict and rigorous policy and cost reduction” that according to the Board of Directors, allowed the conditions “to better compete with other operators working in the same market environment, thus assuring the sustainability of the company”.

The operating revenues of the group increased by 6.4 per cent to 394.6 million EUR thanks mainly to the growth of CTT Expresso and Tourline Express , both CEP companies, and also Payshop, an easy-payment company.

Post Office® cuts the cost of credit card spending abroad

People using a Post Office® Credit Card will get an even better deal from Monday (2nd October 2006).

When shoppers use the card abroad, they’ll no longer be charged commission.

As the UK’s leading travel money business, the Post Office® wants to give customers an even better deal on their travels.

What’s more, the interest-free period for balance transfers has been extended from six to eight months. And for three months customers will be charged no interest on new purchases.

After this period, Classic card customers will move on to a standard rate of 14.9% APR and Platinum card holders move on to 13.9% APR. So even when the interest rate ends, customers can benefit from one of the best rates on the market.
