Royal Mail sets up online system to support new post pricing structure

Royal Mail has implemented an online pricing application to handle the changes it made to its letter and package pricing last month. The changes in the pricing structure, the first in 100 years, link the cost of postage to the size and weight of an item, rather than its weight alone.Technology supplier Selectica redeveloped the Royal Mail’s legacy online pricing calculator and used Java code to support the new Pricing in Proportion structure. The system, which is used by organisations that have large, complex mailing requirements, uses Selectica’s Java-based pricing and configuration engine, the Pricing Configurator, which integrates into Royal Mail’s existing Java-based portal, which uses software from ATG.The Pricing Configurator will also link into new online applications, such as Stampnow, which allows users to buy and print their own postage stamps once they have calculated the correct price.Royal Mail has worked with Selectica since 2001 and was using a vanilla version of its pricing software, which was not integrated into the postal service’s e-commerce platform.

Off with her head! Royal row as queen stamped out

Britain’s Royal Mail introduced one of the most radical changes ever to the postal system Tuesday, letting customers buy stamps online — but the move sparked a royal row centred on the queen’s head.
People unwilling to wait in lengthy post office queues or those who have run out of stamps when the shops are closed will be able to print out unique bar codes directly onto envelopes or sticky labels at the click of a mouse.
Royal Mail said the move was one of the most important to the postal system since the introduction of the Penny Black — the world’s first adhesive stamp — in 1840.

GLS puts new Eastern German depot into operation

GLS Germany has put its new EUR 5.1 million depot at Limbach-Oberfrohna, near Chemnitz in eastern Germany, into operation, increasing its capacity in the region close to the Czech border.

The 3,700 sqm parcel sorting centre, which replaces a smaller nearby site, is located on an 18,000 sqm plot of land close to the A4 motorway. Equipped with a modern parcel sorting system, the facility can handle some 20,000 shipments per day on average, and up to 25,000 parcels a day at peak times. Some 40 GLS employees and 65 drivers will work at and out of the depot, a 25% increase in jobs compared to the former site.

“Perfect transportation connections, more space and a modern technical installation – the depot fulfils all the conditions for reliable and secure shipment handling,” declared Klaus Conrad, Managing Director of GLS Germany.

UK Royal Mail unveils new online Postage Service

Royal Mail today launched a new service that allows the general public to buy and print their postage online for the first time.

The online postage service gives customers more choice and flexibility in the way they access Royal Mail’s services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Customers pay for their postage on the internet by selecting the appropriate amount for their letter or parcel, and paying by debit or credit card or via a pre-pay account. A unique barcode is then printed directly onto envelopes, labels or paper before posting in the normal way.

There is no subscription fee to the service – available from www.royalmail.com – and tariffs are the same as normal postage. Customers can choose from a full range of posting options, from First Class to international services. Customers can also print out a variety of forms online, including a Certificate of Posting and Customs forms for international postings.

UK Royal Mail lets customers print stamps at home – report

Customers of the Royal Mail postal service will be able to pay for their postage online and print out unique bar codes directly onto envelopes from today, The Times reported.

The newspaper reported that the Royal Mail says the move is one of the most significant changes to the postal system since the Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive stamp, was introduced in 1840. The historic stamp was introduced to shift the cost of postage to the sender, instead of the recipient.

Customers will have to set up an online account and can then pay for postage using either a credit card or a prepaid account, selecting the appropriate amount for their letter or parcel.

The new service comes shortly after the Royal Mail introduced a new system for sending items, based on the size as well as the weight of the package.
