Banking Services At Post Offices Soon

An agreement should be signed within the next few days between Bank Pocztowy and Poczta Polska post office, regarding the opening of banking services at post offices. All necessary licenses to operate have already been acquired. Final approval had to be given by Transport Minister Jerzy Polaczek; he has now given the go ahead. The deal will allow banking services to be rendered by Bank Pocztowy in 5,000 post office outlets. “We shall provide our clients with all basic banking services, such as a good and competitive current account, access to which will be over the post office counter, telephone, Internet and through cash machines. Our clients will only have to pay PLN3.95 per month for their accounts. To my knowledge, we do not have a competitor who would offer such good conditions. There are of course certain niche offers, but without such easy access to one’s account,” said Piotr Kaminski, head of Bank Pocztowy.

9 European Postal Service Providers Call for Caution in the 2009 Postal Service

Following the publication of the PWC study on the “Impact on Universal Service of the Full Market Accomplishment of the Postal Internal Market in 2009”, the postal operators of Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland and Spain, which account for over 50% of the Community population, express their concern about the study outcomes and plead the European Commission for a balanced approach when drawing up future postal legislation. At the beginning of this month of July, the European Commission published a study undertaken at its request by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) in order to assess, in each member State, the impact on the universal postal provision of a full liberalisation in 2009. As stated by the postal Directive 2002/39/EC, based on the conclusions of this study, the Commission shall submit by 31 December 2006 “a report to the European Parliament and the Council accompanied by a proposal confirming, if appropriate, the date of 2009 for the full accomplishment of the postal internal market or determining any other step in the light of the study’s conclusions”.

Pay and working practices deal ends postal strike threat

The threat of the first national postal strike in a decade was lifted yesterday after agreement was reached between Royal Mail and the Communications Workers’ Union over the 2006 pay rise.

The union accepted the 2.9 per cent rise imposed by the management in May with additional cash and pledges about job security and pension rights.

In return, it lifted the threat of a strike ballot and made concessions on working practices that will help Royal Mail to compete in the increasingly tough postal services market.

However, there is still no agreement on the scheme to hand 20 per cent of Royal Mail shares to staff through an employee trust. Allan Leighton, group chairman, sees giving the staff a stake in the business as essential to win their support for restructuring and modernisation that will involve changes in working practices and the loss of jobs.

Takeaway food leaflets: We don't want them!

Peter Vincent has had enough of pizzas. He’s had his fill of Indian takeaways, too, and when it comes to kebabs, he’d really rather not.

He explained: “Leaflets advertising all these things come pouring through my letterbox all the time, and it’s getting out of hand. How many pizzas can the public of Tunbridge Wells eat?”

Mr Vincent, 61, of Mounfield Road, Tunbridge Wells, never eats pizza anyway, and his wife, Elisabeth, is allergic to them. He said: “We’re registered to stop junk mail and phone calls, but how do we stop leafletters stuffing things through our letterboxes? It’s our right not to get this stuff, which is unwanted and mostly just torn up.”

However Mandip Johal, manager of Domino’s Pizza in Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, said: “We couldn’t run our home delivery business without advertising in this way, and in the 18 months since we opened, we have had only one complaint.”

He added: “We run four to five campaigns a year and send out about 60,000 leaflets, but if householders display notices requesting no junk mail, we respect that.”
