UK Royal Mail plans discounts with 'zonal' scheme

Royal Mail is planning a pre-emptive strike to prevent competitors from cherry-picking major business clients, by bringing in a pricing structure that offers major discounts for city deliveries.

Called ‘zonal pricing’, the scheme will charge various rates according to the destination, and is to affect all mail sent through Mailsort 3 – the most popular service for direct mail. It will include magazine- delivery scheme Presstream.

Royal Mail’s major offensive to build awareness of pricing in proportion – including what is claimed to be the biggest door-drop push in UK history – is coming under fire for both its scale and timing

When Royal Mail revealed it was planning a campaign to support the introduction of pricing in proportion (PIP), it not only boasted that the push would reach every adult in the UK, but that it would be one of the biggest campaigns in the organisation’s 350-year history (PM November 11).

In theory, it would ensure that, as the pricing of mail changes on August 21 to include the size as well as weight, this is common knowledge for consumers and businesses alike. But, despite the campaign lasting over a month and consisting of many different elements, there are concerns that it will not be enough to make the change go through smoothly.

New scanners for GLS Polish couriers and branches

GLS Poland has invested €2 million on some 800 new scanners for its couriers and branch offices in Eastern Europe’s largest express parcels market. Customers benefit from improved tracking options.

The hand-held data scanners, developed in cooperation with IBM and Symbol Technologies, enable GLS drivers to transmit shipment receipt data to the central system using Wireless LAN technology. The new scanners feature multi-coloured displays and high resolution cameras to record electronic signatures and also any damage to the shipment.

German bank to sell Deutsche Post stake

KfW Group, the German state-owned development bank, said Wednesday that it would sell a 1.5 billion euro stake in Deutsche Post, increasing the proportion of freely traded shares to as much as 64.5 percent.

German state-owned development bank Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KfW) said it raised 1.3 bln eur after yesterday placing 63.6 mln Deutsche Post AG shares at 20.45 eur per share.
