Spanish Unipost signs alliance agreement with DHL

Spanish private postal services provider Unipost signed a strategic alliance agreement with global express delivery and logistic group DHL, under which Unipost international distribution network will become part of DHL Global Mail, Unipost said on June 21, 2006.

The alliance will allow Unipost to provide delivery services to 200 countries. Unipost international services include business mail, direct marketing, publication distribution and parcel delivery.

UK Royal Mail looks to clear GBP5.6bn pension deficit

Royal Mail is ramping up payments into its pension scheme in a bid to fill its GBP5.6bn pension deficit black hole, according to reports. An agreement with its pension trustees sees Royal Mail up its payments into its pension scheme to GBP750m from GBP480m, paid annually for the next 17 years, reported the Daily Telegraph. It is not clear how the Royal Mail will fund it, with operating profits at GBP355m last year. Cost-cutting measures have been suggested as a likely strategy to help fund the pension deficit.

An Post resumes search for new chief

An Post is facing an uphill task to have a new chief executive in place in time for a board meeting this Thursday after the first-choice candidate, John Foley, turned down the position to remain chief executive of Waterford Crystal. There was speculation last night that other candidates were now in the frame, including Elmer Toime, former deputy chairman of the British Royal Mail. Mr Toime also once head of the New Zealand postal service.

Other candidates believed to have applied for the post include David McRedmond, commercial director at Eircom, and Larry Donald, a senior executive with An Post, who previously worked with ESB.

There is still a chance the selection committee may return to one of these candidates, but this is thought unlikely. Instead the company will have to select another candidate from the group that originally applied for the post.

UPS and GLS top German CEP sales ranking

UPS and GLS have been rated the best CEP operators in Germany in an in-depth survey of sales performance. Hermes and Trans-o-flex came bottom of the list of seven leading carriers which also included DHL, DPD and TNT. The survey by Wiesbaden-based consultancy Marketing Partner compared and evaluated the carriers’ entire offer process from initial customer contact, advice and offer through to reliable timing and the length of the whole offer phase. The survey was based on a concrete enquiry for a complex logistics outsourcing contract involving more than 50,000 shipments per year.
