Swiss govt announces plans to privatise Swiss Post

The Swiss government announced plans to privatise the Swiss Post as part of its efforts to liberalise the country’s postal services. The government said it wants to create a level playing field for private competition. Therefore it has ordered the Communications Department to draft a bill making the necessary amendments to Swiss postal legislation. Even though Swiss Post may eventually lose its monopoly on the posting of letters, it will maintain its public services mandate, the government said.

Austrian Post buys Slovak mail firm

Austrian Post has entered the Slovak postal market with the acquisition of the direct marketing company Kolos. This is its second market entry in Central Europe following the takeover of Feibra in Hungary last autumn.

TNT expects to complete logistics sale H2 2006

TNT NV expects to complete the sale of its Logistics business in the second half of 2006, CEO Peter Bakker said on May 3, 2006. After the sale TNT will announce what it intends to do with the divestment proceeds. There are different opportunities – an additional share buyback, a distribution of a one-off dividend and/or investments in a further growth – the CEO added. Bakker declined to comment a statement of UPS, the world largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialised transportation and logistics services, that it was ready for an extremely large acquisition.

UK Royal Mail chief urges staff to take shares

Allan Leighton, Royal Mail’s chairman, has raised the stakes in the controversy over employee share ownership by asking for support from the 180,000 workforce.
Mr Leighton is this week writing to all Royal Mail’s staff about the scheme, which has angered the main postal union and caused widespread concern among Labour politicians. He has asked for their backing in a move that he hopes will kill off arguments against the scheme, which many see as the first step towards privatisation. Mr Leighton’s appeal comes as the Communication Workers Union is preparing to ballot its members over whether they want Royal Mail to remain in public ownership.
