Target hits Carlisle

Target Express has opened a 2,200sq m depot in Carlisle to accommodate a growing customer base within the region.

The depot is six times as large as its previous site in Ecclefechan, which it replaces; ten vehicles make deliveries throughout Cumbria, South-west Scotland and the Scottish borders.

Target has 55 depots through out the UK.

Switzerland bans Post AG outsourcing parcel business

Swiss Federal Justice Ministry has banned local post carrier Post AG’s plans for outsourcing its parcel business to a joint-stock company in which it has a stake, the company said on April 27, 2006. According to the decision, Post AG can offer universal postal services only from its parent company and not from subsidiaries. Outside the parent company, Post AG is allowed only partial operations such as co-operation with agencies or the delegation of transport services on third parties. After the decision, Post AG said it would abandon its plans to transfer the parcel delivery business into a joint-stock company.

Pall-Ex pushes its own 'decker design

Pall-Ex wants its members to buy its own standardised double-decker, which it describes as the “ideal hub and operational trailer”.

Andrew Triolo, Pall-Ex business development manager, tells MT: “We will be encouraging our members to opt for this, as commonality is a good thing.” So far only one has gone on the road.

The Pall-Ex-spec trailer, the first of which was built by Montracon and went into operation with Davies Turner in January, incorporates a number of innovative safety features. These include see-through mesh flooring, which allows forklift operators to assess pallet positioning and pre-empt any loading or unloading problems.

United {Pallet Network is to add member with the carrot of share options for members becoming available in 12 to 24 months time. Simon Hazelgrove, who joined from UK Pallets this month as national sales director, says there are still many well-established hauliers who are not in a network and who will find the share offer an extra attraction.

TPN pallet throughput increases

TPNs pallet throughput rose 21% in the financial year just ended, says chairman Richard Eldred. Growth came through expansion with existing member and from new memebers. The introduction of quarter-pallets had minimal impact he says.
