Campaign to save UK Post Office card account

A campaign is being started this week to try to persuade the government to reverse its decision to end a crucial contract which could spell closure for thousands of Britain’s post offices. The National Federation of Sub-Postmasters is hoping public pressure will make the Department for Work and Pensions re-consider its decision to end the contract for the Post Office card account through which millions of people receive benefits and pensions. A petition by the federation says: “We believe that the post office network provides a vital service to local communities in both urban and rural areas, which are threatened by the government’s withdrawal of services from local post offices.”

Germany's Deutsche Post eyes WH Smith's news spin-off

The newspaper distribution arm of WH Smith could face a takeover bid from Germany’s Deutsche Post after the retailer’s chief executive, Kate Swann, announced plans to demerge the business and float it on the stock market, though no timetable was given. WH Smith considered selling its news distribution arm in 2001, when it came close to selling it to a private equity buyer. Deutsche Post considered a bid at that time and City analysts believe it could quickly renew its interest in the business. Private equity firms have also been tipped as potential bidders for the news division. It is one of three newspaper distribution businesses nationally, along with Menzies and Dawson Holdings.

Nacex reports higher revenues

Portugal postal traffic up 15.5 pct y/y Q4 2005

Portugal’s postal traffic exceeded 68 million shipments in the last quarter of 2005, up 15.5 pct year-on-year, data from the local communications regulator Anacom showed on April 13, 2005. Compared to the third quarter of 2005, the country’s postal traffic grew by some 1.0 pct. Some five million of the total number of 68 million shipments in the three-month period to December 2005 were express mail deliveries. The national traffic in the last quarter 2005 exceeded 62 million shipments. On the other hand, the outgoing international traffic and the incoming international traffic amounted to 5.438 million shipments and 5.653 million shipments, respectively.
